Favorite Hunter Type Stallions of 2017

Basically what the title says:), which new stallions are your favorite Hunter type stallions?? Or even which newer stallions have you been liking lately, that have had hunter type foals?

Partially using this a way to get through homework by looking at all the gorgeous stallions, and to keep me up to date on the new and upcoming horses.

It won’t allow me to edit, but just wanted to clarify, since I know technicalities are important to us horse folk, wanted to edit to “which newer stallions have produced high quality hunters.”

Looking forward to all the recommendations

Apiro! I bred my mare to him last year and I LOVE his babies. He really stamps his hind end on his offspring. He is also very versatile and is not only a beautiful mover, but gorgeous jumper, quiet enough for ammies, trails, and i’ve even seen some offspring doing 3 day eventing.

I really like the look of Thanks for the Gold, HH Himself and Prototype. Its a shame Rolando II passed away but they may still have frozen available.

Do you mean Rolando by Ramiro Z or Ralando II by Ramiro Z? Both are deceased.

Good catch. I meant Ralando II by Ramiro Z.

I have a coming 4 year old by Bon Balou, and he looks to be a total hunter- flat knee trot, super fancy, nice jump through the chute. I miss that stallion. My mare is currently with Brookson Farm in Canada, where she just had a filly by Prototype, and I was able to meet with Nancy and Ashley and meet Pita and he is to die for- puppy personality, throws the bling, I am excited to see what he produces, I know it is still early, but the filly my mare had sold almost immediately and she is much bigger than my Bon Balou colt. I’m having a foal by Prototype this spring, crossing my fingers for a filly so I can have one of each, haha. Also like what Dreamscape Farm is bringing to the table with Lestat and Valentino, even though they’re not “hunter stallions”. Love Ultime Espoir, but again these are all up and comers, so it will be interesting to see what they produce. And, I’ll always have a spot in my heart for Cunningham!

I have a coming 4 year old Bon Balou baby as well. Same qualities as yours!

They’re not “hunter stallions” or they’re not promoted as “hunter stallions.” There’s more to a “hunter stallion” than a dark color, four high whites and blaze.

I’ve seen several imported Valentino offspring performing in the hunter ring. They all jumped quite nicely, moved well, and seemed to have great brains. I take note when a trainer actually mentions the pedigree…

As the designer of Tish Quirk’s new website, please go there rather than the old one! Much more info, a page for each stallion including the young ones, embedded video, etc. Click here:

Agree on Valentino. I’ve sat on two that were lovely for the hunter ring, lighter types though which I like, and very good brains.

We had a beautiful foal by Rosenthal last year out of our Jupiter mare, and are awaiting her final foal and our keeper by Carrico. He has some lovely big-class hunters showing, fingers crossed!

Cabardino produces very nice hunter types

Anyone seen any Checkmate offspring? Another lovely Dreamscape Farms stallion.

I’ve bred to Checkmate 3 times and have been very impressed with each of the foals. I sold one of my 2015 fillies as a yearling (though she was so nice I considered keeping her) and a mare in foal to Checkmate that had a colt in 2016. My other 2015 filly is the last filly out of my foundation mare and I like her so much that I have retained her to hopefully replace her mother in my broodmare band.
All 3 are very tall and leggy with good type, pretty heads and very good hunter movement. The two fillies that were born here and that I have personal experience with are brave and real people pleasers. My coming 2yo keeper filly was very shy and stand-offish until she was about 18 months old but now is a pocket pony. None have been free jumped yet but I doubt I’ll be disappointed
The 2015 filly out of a Rio Grande mare (bay) was Top Filly at her inspection and the 2015 filly out of my foundation mare by Salut (chestnut) was Foal of Distinction at her GOV inspection.

Just got home from bopping my Cabardino youngster around his first course this morning. I am fully and completely in love with him.

Nice babies! Wish I had one in my field… I bred to him last year but the mare sadly did not take. No fault of the stallion or stallion owner, who was awesome to work with. It was the end of the season and we had spent the first part of the season trying to clear her of an infection so I was not totally surprised she did not take.
