Saddlers Row is still up and running in Palatine.
Biggest loss in this area was Ann Hubbard’s; that was my go-to for ages. Always had exactly what I needed.

Oh my gosh-- thank you for the name. It just escaped my old brain this morning! I miss both those stores so much. Charming in a low-key, messy fashion. I loved spending an hour their puttering around. You could find some real bargains! I have some other reasons for avoiding Gallops, beyond pricing, but it does offer a chance to browse amongst the high end clothes and tack…and dream.
I like to shop brick and mortar stores through their online portals. Mary’s and Quail Hollow out of Texas are two I’ve used recently. Price points in line with many online sources and you can speak to the ‘real people’ there.
Thanks!
I forget who told me Frances closed Saddler’s.
We used to call it Barrington Lite
Where in Belgium is Emmers?
I was in Portland for a wedding a few years ago and wandered into Portland Outdoor Store downtown - amazed to find that upstairs they had some English riding apparel, a bunch of saddles and even some strapgoods. The inventory was all super old (some of the bits and strapgoods had Miller’s manufacturer tags, so had to be 20+ years old) but it was such a fun, weird little discovery.
The Portland Outdoor Store is/was owned by the family (the Popsicles). of the owner of HorseTalk, another former excellent tack shop in Portland. Diane Popick Edwards now runs HTM as an online and pop up at shows store.
Horsemen’s Outlet in NJ and On Course Consignment in Wellington
Waxhaw Tack Exchange in Waxhaw, NC.
Crammed full of tack, boots, riding clothes, etc… Wonderful tack store, and they will often special order some of the truly weird stuff I occasionally NEED.
About a million years ago, my favorite was the Harry Hall on in London but that was a million years ago. Now it’s all on line.
Oh, gosh. Harry Hall. Remember when those breeches were everything? I dreamed about shopping there.
Ann Hubbard’s was wonderful. I used to drive there just to drool over all the lovely things! . So much stuff in a relatively small space.
There’s one local shop where I am, and a Dover’s just opened up. I was so sad when the other two local shops closed, one in particular. It was tiny, but the owner bent over backward to get whatever you needed or wanted. She also had a good selection of items on the shelf. Another attraction was her place was in the same strip mall as a really good feed store that also carries some horse supplies.
Hamont. It’s huge. My friend there said I should schedule a stop, and it didn’t disappoint! I came home with new paddock boots and half chaps. They also have a shop at Sentower and one in NL in Kronenberg but I’ve only been to the BE one. And I’ve ordered from them online but delivery fees to the US have gotten steep.
I haven’t been to either in decades, but I’ll always think fondly of The Paddock Shop in Burbank (my first hunt coat) and Jedlicka’s in Santa Barbara (my first saddle). Currently, Dressage Extensions in Moorpark has a decent selection.
Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions! Hopefully I’ll get the opportunity to check some of these out in person. It’s fun to know where good tack stores are all over the country and potentially check them out when traveling.
To @Fiesta01 who asked what my favorite store is-- Rick’s Heritage is near me; they’re good and I’ve enjoyed going there for many years. But I remember ages ago making day trips to the old Beval’s in New Jersey, and being so impressed with the size of the store, the quality of the inventory, and their custom branded lines. It seems like Beval’s now is a shadow of what they used to be which makes me kind of sad, and I was kind of wondering what other stores could still create that feeling of excitement walking in.
I loved Beval’s, too. Made more than one trip up there when I was stationed in Willow Grove, PA, back in the day. Sorry to hear it’s not the same anymore.
Southern to Mid Michigan area -
Sport Horse Saddlery - New Hudson, MI
Wyldewood Tack - Lambertville, MI
Dover Saddlery - Brighton, MI
Tom’s Western Store - Ovid, MI
The Moody Mare Tack Shack - Adrian, MI
Crest View - Mason, MI
I’ve been to all of these, and they are doing well! With the exception of Dover, the rest are small businesses, family owned and operated. I give my business to them first. Especially The Moody Mare, Tom’s and Crest View.
I loved Beval back in the day and also what was it, Salem Saddlery, around the corner from Old Salem Farm? And All the Kings Horses in Ridgefield, CT - Danny was such a lovely person
Unfortunately, there are no (that I’ve found) great tack shops in central Texas
Valencia Sport Saddlery in Southern California. Hands down the best – whether at their main store in Lakeview Terrace, or (during the circuit) at Thermal! They have the best selection and the best service – truly a value-added experience to shop there in person!!!
I am still in denial about this.
I bought my first bridle and breeches there.
