Favorite mid-priced leather halter

Walsh

Well, I just looked online and they are on sale for $25 & less. I really can’t complain about a halter at that price point!
That’s probably the weanling size? I did see that size for around $20

Walsh

Nothing but Walsh on my Morgan!

Can’t wait for the details on her.

Quillins

Thank you all for the great recommendations. Lots of lovely halters to choose! Now to decide if I want a rolled nose or traditional one. Still deciding on a barn name as well. She is registered as UT Devine Diva and currently is called Lily. While cute, I stay away from common people names as my name Jessie, my husband’s Pete, brother’s Hank, and nephew’s Waylon…are popular pet names. Someone once thought I was seriously ill when a friend was actually talking about Jessie, their dog. Anyway, I digress. Can’t wait for the little mare to arrive and get her a beautiful halter among other things.

Happy riding,
Jessie

This halter from Fennells is gorgeous. Even nicer with it’s name tag from haltertags.com.

I used to say Ocala Tack Shack, but Albright’s is nicer. I would peg either of those above Quillin (I’ve had all three).

Hopefully this link works - if you click through, you can see a side-by-side comparison of Tack Shack vs Albright’s.

(PS - I also have Morgans and use these halters on them)
Albright’s is the darker one, right? I do like it’s quality a touch more than the Tack Shack. Great pictures for that, BTW!

I recently saw a Tack Shack halter in person and I was a tad disappointed. Just a tad. I’d like to see one of those side by side with a Quillin’s.

I think Perri’s halters do a nice job for the price but fit badly/large.

My favorite halter buying strategy is to get one of those cheap, single ply Gatsby halters for TO, and buy another one like a Quillins or MacPherson or similar for formal wear. I do take care of the cheap every day halter and they last if your horse isn’t rough on 'em. I like it that they are cheap, breakable and light. I do put a name plate on mine.

The tough part about buying a “mid range” halter that’s above that $30 mark is that when something breaks, you will have a hard time finding a leather guy to fix it in a way that’s not really expensive and/or a hack job. If you do that once with your, say, $75 halter, you now have a $100 halter that looks bad. Why do that? You could fix or trash a Gatsby twice and still be ahead.

I think the sign of being among the 1% is a set of horses turned out in those well-made triple stitched leather halters. I’d join them if I were uber-rich. But even if I were sorta rich, I still think I’d have my horses in the cheap, light, one-ply Gatsby halters.

I use these from Perri’s They are very affordable and they hold up well.

I’ve never seen them fit badly. I have seen the crown piece be too long, but a hole punch and 2 minutes takes care of that.

Dish faced WB (people always thought he was an Arab) and long faced TB (needs a cob cavesson) both in Perri’s

Pretty average headed WB mare in her Perri’s.

the triple stitch halters are too heavy for turn out. Dispatcher gets bad face rubs from them. That’s why I like the Gatsby for turnout.

I’ve used, and like, the Walsh halters.

out of your price range, but I can’t help share this stunning halter I found.

That is stunning! I may have to stretch the budget or add it to my birthday/Christmas wish list…Hmm…

I absolutely love my Danzig Brothers halters. They run ~$60 and you can get one in a custom size, with nameplate, in under 2 weeks at no extra charge. The most recent one I purchased lives outdoors (on a hook) in all sorts of weather and still looks brand new 6 months later. They are soft and sturdy with stunning craftsmanship.

WOW. These guys have some lovely things, including what look like nice, light, no-frills turnout halter starting at 24 bucks. And unique dog collars!

Great find, thanks for sharing

How are their name plates compared to Quillin or Haltertags.com?

Gatsby Halters

I love my rolled nose halters from quillins! And will be getting a few more soon!

I have this halter and I love it. I’ll admit that I am a bit of a nut for fancy stitching though. The chain on the lead seems a little cheap but you aren’t paying much to begin with. I did notice that this halter oiled up REALLY nicely. I didn’t think it needed oil but it did.

I bought the average horse size so I can’t speak on sizing for smaller heads.

Actually, the darker one is the Tack Shack halter. In real life, I really think the Albright’s is better quality. (The photos compare an older Tack Shack that was just cleaned with a brand-new Albright’s that hadn’t been used). I had custom-ordered the Tack Shack halter double-stitched and with the fancy crown; the Albright’s halter now also has a fancy crown.

I’ll see at some point if I can get a picture of a Quillin side-by-side with them… I have all three (just not in the same state!). For all that people love Quillin halters, I put them in third behind Albright’s and Tack Shack.

Hands-down, Quillin has the best halter plates, though. (Halter Tags does really good plates, but Quillin’s are a step above. I like The Engraver for more “delicate” plates, like for bridles, etc).

I’ve never turned out with halters, though, so my requirements have always been similar to what the Morgan was bred for - a workhorse by day that cleans up well enough for formal events. (I had never thought of my halters like that until now… and being that I’m a Morgan person, I really like it!!!)

I’m at a place now where many of the horses are turned out with halters… if I were to join their ranks, I’d have a Quillin halter (because their default nose is single-ply) with an adjustable chin, double buckle crown, and throat snap.

Walsh halters are nice, but I wouldn’t classify them as “midrange” at this point. They’ve gotten pretty spendy.

Well, name plates are ordered from Halter Tags, but no halter yet. Bosco’s halter is the SmartPak triple stitch that is actually made by Perri’s and has a name plate done by SmartPak. After 6 years, the name plate looks dreadful. Pretty sure it was just plated. The halter has held up fine and fits him well enough. As for the new little Morgan mare now called Reba McEntire (fits her registered name UT Devine Diva and being a flaxen sorrel/chestnut), I am trying to decide what looks best and where I can get the best deal on the same item. Love to get a decent deal. Thank you all again for the suggestions.

Happy riding,
Jessie

Top quality from what I’ve seen. I’m not overly impressed by Quillin or Walsh though. I find them stiff, especially as they age. The Danzig halters come soft and supple and just get nicer the longer you leave them out in the rain. Not joking. I’ve purchased 4 so far including gifts and I cannot be happier. I’d easily pay double that and feel that I was getting a fair shake. I have zero complaints about the nameplates. You can customize as you like if you call the store. Otherwise, the options for online are fairly basic.
