Favorite Mid-weight Winter Jacket

I’m trying to upgrade my winter wardrobe to be a little more professional. I have plenty of carharrt and duluth wear, but the barn I’m managing now and the barns I hope to manage in the future require a little more “style”.

Last year I splurged on the ELT Saphira Thermo Coat which I love love love for the middle of winter and for Christmas received the Kerrits Coach’s Coat so I’m now completely waterproof.

But I need a fall/early winter/early spring jacket/coat. For when a soft shelled jacket isn’t quite enough, but the heavy duty wear is too much.

I ordered the Irideon Highlands Barn Coat from Tack of the Day in Medium, but of course I was between sizes and should have chosen the large. (If anyone is looking for a Medium at a good price let me know.)

I’m wondering if I should order a new one in large, or just go with something else. Price is DEFINITELY a factor right now, but something that is going to do the job is the priority. Again, appearance counts in this decision. I’m hourglass shaped and very busty, so something with a well defined waist is preferred for aesthetic reasons.

I’m a big fan of vests, for my mid weight I like to combine a mid or heavy weight vest with other layers depending on weather. Then if I’m riding I can loose the vest if I need to. Then when it gets colder I just bring both a vest and heavy jacket to barn, switch to vest for riding or if I get too warm, etc. I find them very versatile!

Goodwill provided me with a handsome burgundy microfiber jacket with a polarfleece button-in lining.
Near-waterproof too.

Right now it is perfect w/o the lining, but in (Midwest) mid-Winter the lining makes it toasty.
In the occasional subzero temps it is fine layered over more polarfleece.

I have a very light, thin, real down jacket from Eddie Bauer that I wear starting at 50F and all winter long. They don’t make it any more. It is very nicely tailored with darts, pockets, and rear vent. If you could find something similar, I think it looks quite professional and high end. Don’t go for the puffy down jackets.

I’d also recommend nice vests if you are going to be doing physical work in this mid-temperature range. Again, I’d do a down vest with nice tailoring. Costco actually has some really nice ones that roll up into little bags.

My favorite mid-weight winter jacket is a North Face jacket I picked up for $100 at the outlet. Does it have to be a horse-brand?

Quilted coats and vests look nice but still say, “Horse person” Good for layering too

I do a couple of different things- for when the softshell doesn’t seem quite enough, I put a turtleneck underneath. The high, warm neck helps make up for 10 degrees or so, especially when paired with wool socks and insulated gloves.
When it’s too cold for softshell I go down. It insulates so well that I can wear the same down coat for a large range of temps- from 50 or so to 10 below. I’m also an Edie Bauer down fan- I have an outlet near me and I have 3 down parkas (one for barn, one for work, and one for when one of those dies- which so far both of the first ones are going on 4 years now).
They have a 2-way zip and removable hood. Mine are similar to this style:

Another angle to consider is thermal underoos. I really like the thin, slippery ones, and I find that if I have them on and the wind isn’t getting to my skin, I am much more flexible about outerwear.
