What are some of your favorite purple shampoos for washing a white pony/horse? Pony in question LOVES to get dirty, and rolls in her poop enough that parts of her tail are almost permanently brown. What have you used and recommend?
edited to add:
any type of purple shampoo suffices, human or horse.
I’ve had success with vetrolin white and bright.
Is it commonly sold at drugstores like CVS, walgreens, etc?
Not that I’ve seen. I get it from the tack store. Might also be able to find it at Tractor Supply or similar.
Use whatever purple or blue shampoo you like, but afterwards make sure to seal the hairs against future stains with a silicone product like ShowSheen
I also like a purple hair mask Vs a shampoo, because they seem more effective and are conditioning. Wash the tail w shampoo, apply the mask as directed then rinse and apply silicone.
You can add bluing to whatever shampoo you like best.
If you don’t care about a fancy scent then I get the Generic purple shampoo from Sally’s Beauty Supply. Literally it is the white bottle with black lettering on a white bottle. Smells like a very old beauty salon. It is the Generic for Shimmer Lights which works really well too and smells better.
I have the best results with dawn dish soap. After trying so many variations of blue/ purple shampoos, Goop, ketchup, etc Dawn wins every time. I used it last weekend on my greyed out Grey - her tail hadn’t been washed in months and was a lovely brown black at the bottom. One super quick wash (my heart wasn’t in it) with dawn and no more stains. For bad stains I would do multiple washings with it and if it still needs more I will use hair bleach on the bottom parts but I find that isn’t needed as long as I wash it every few months.
human or dog purple/blue shampoos are cheaper per ounce usually than horse shampoos and they work fine. But I’ve also found that they don’t work as well as the Vetrolin bright and white or Quick silver. So, I use the cheaper stuff more on the regular and save the quick silver for shows.
My go to is Sullivan’s Stain Buster. It’s made for showing stock animals. It’s like Quic Silver on steroids.
I have samples of the UltraCruz Equine Bright White available. PM me if interested
I just got this to try on my gray gelding’s tail. I have some friends who use it on their blond hair and have great results with it. He’s getting a bath this weekend so I’ll report back after I test it out!
Well, color me impressed! It had been an embarrassingly long time since I washed my boy’s tail, probably 2-3 months. It was gross. I did one quick scrub with Cowboy Magic Rosewater shampoo to get the worst of the dirt and grime off.
Applied the Fanola No Yellow, let it sit for 5 minutes, lathered, and rinsed as per the instructions. I could tell immediately when it started rinsing that it had worked. It is a bit drying, so I followed up with an Argan oil deep conditioner and let that sit for 10-15 minutes.
His tail is clean, white, and super soft. Will definitely be using this again.
If you try this, do follow the instructions. Wear gloves and don’t let it sit longer than recommended. This stuff is pigmented and it will stain your hands (and probably turn your horse’s tail blue).
Oh wow! I have to order that!
For humans the one with the best reviews and my personal fave is shimmer lights. But if I really had a yellow tail I’d go with my old favorite - just add Kate’s bluing to Dove (really you can use any soap but white soap makes it easy to see if you have too little or too much bluing.)
