I am thinking about selling my current saddle, and I was wondering what brands y’all would recommend for my new one. I currently have a barrel saddle from Ruffs Saddlery in FL. It is a very well made saddle, but I don’t love how it sits me (I feel perched up off the horse). I mostly trail ride so I am looking for something comfy enough to ride in for a couple hours at a time. I would prefer a used saddle in the $600 dollar range, it doesn’t have to be anything fancy because I don’t do any showing.
Thanks!
I like used Crates reining saddles.
The brand that fits your horse.
By happenstance, my last 4 saddles have been Circle Y. I swear I have not done it on purpose, but they were just the saddles that I found to fit a particular horse. I primarily barrel race, so my saddles are as such but I do the majority of my conditioning on the trails and put a lot of miles on in my saddles. Can’t say I’ve had an issue with comfort on any of them.
I will say that the newer cheaper Circle Y saddles are certainly not the quality of the older ones. Although my latest saddle was from their performance series. The tree has a lifetime warranty and the leather is soooo nice. So the quality of the performance line is really nice. Go figure that my hard-to-fit 6-year-old needed an expensive saddle!
Can you post pictures of your horse to get an idea of what his back looks like?
I will try to get a picture when I am out at the barn tomorrow. He has low withers and fairly large shoulders, with a long back. The saddle I have now has FQH bars, and that seems to fit his back pretty well.
Given your limited price range, I would just keep trying every single used saddle available in your price range until you find one that fits both you and the horse. At that price point, I don’t think you can be really picky about brand. And while different brands fit differently, so do different saddles/trees within the same brand, so there is no reason to think any particular brand is more or less likely to fit.
The Fabtrons are a good synthetic option.
I have a black Wintec (synthetic “dura leather”) that is 10+ years old and I love it. It’s a little rough around the edges because it’s been used hard in its lifetime but it’s still super comfortable. Great for trail riding because you don’t have to worry about it getting wet or dirty and it’s SUPER light and easy to haul around. It’s been used on a wide variety of horses and seems to fit most well enough. Circle Y saddles are nice too, and I have an older used one to show in, but I wouldn’t give up my Wintec for the world when it comes to everyday riding.
