Favorite Stall Fans?

I’ve done box fans bungee corded to the stall bars for the past two years. But I’m really not happy with the box fans. I don’t think they blow enough air unless they’re on the highest setting, and I worry about leaving them on the highest setting all day and possibly burning out the motor.

So I’m looking for something else that can safely be bungee corded to the grill and hopefully blow more air. I’m looking for something on the inexpensive side, but don’t really have a set budget. I have to buy fans for two horses.

I wish I could get ceiling fans installed above all the stalls in the barn but I don’t have the budget or the correct ceiling set up (exposed beams) for it.

Thanks!

I know someone that uses the blower fans from old heating units for fans, they blow an incredible amount of air. I am pretty confident that you could get them fairly cheaply from a heating and cooling company or a salvage company. However, you would have to modify it somehow to be able to strap it to the bars of the stall.

There were some Lasko box fan models recalled in 2011 for starting fires:

". . .3720, 3723, and 3733 and Galaxy box fans with model number 4733 that have date “2002-03” or “2003-04”

So be careful of what you already have in your barn.

In a perfect world, a “Big Ass Fan” is the way to go –

In the real world, Air King Industrial makes very powerful, high quality, durable fans. You would probably only need a 14" fan on low - wouldn’t recommend the 12", b/c I don’t think it has a sealed motor. I have the 20" floor fan, which we mounted up on the wall; and it will blow you away on high. It’s way more fan than I needed. Yes, the Air King Industrial costs more than a Wal-Mart box fan; but not only is the quality and durability a million times better; they are a lot safer. The smallest size will be fine and cost less, but check the pricing, because sometimes a larger size in on sale and less expensive. You can’t go wrong with one of the black, powder coated models w/ the sealed bearings / motor.

Here’s a comparison of the options -

Here is the fan I have
http://www.amazon.com/Air-King-20-Inch-Pivoting-9220/dp/B0007Q3RHK/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

I also have 2 of these fans from Northern tool - and they are less expensive - though I get free shipping w/ Amazon Prime.
http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_754509_754509

They would also probably work fine for you, but I do not expect them to last as long as the Air King, because they are not powder coated, and we live where rust is a problem. Additionally, while they say it moves 4550 cfm of air vs. 3670 cfm for the Air King. The Air King seems to be about twice as powerful, so I am skeptical about their specs. The Air King also has a more powerful motor - 1/6 hp for Air King vs. 1/8 hp for the Q standard. The Q Standard from Northern tool also claims a safety shutoff if it overheats, and although I don’t see it mentioned I KNOW ours came with brackets to mount them on the wall. WARNING - there is a review that says it does NOT have a sealed motor, so they may have changed something. Call Northern Tool before you order this to verify that it has a sealed motor – you definitely want a sealed motor!

Good Luck!

Well, I just went down to look at the fans we got from Northern Tool, and they say “Flow Pro” – NOT “Q Standard”. In my order history it shows the Q Standard Fan, so they may have switched out vendors since I got my fans. So my fans are the Flow Pro and say Flow Pro on the front. You would need to call Northern Tool to make sure that the quality of the product is the same w/ a sealed motor and safety shutoff if it overheats.

This is the best thing I could to show how to mount the fan by swinging the part that sits on the floor behind the fan and hanging it on brackets. Personally, I would not buy a Lasko fan given all of their recalls.

I have both the 14 inch & 18 inch. 14 inch is ok, 18 inch moves mush more air.

I won’t have a box fan in my barn any longer because of the fire hazard.

If you have enough height inside the stalls, Tractor Supply has fans that can stand on the ground or be hung in a corner. I don’t have enough height, so I stand them in the aisle to blow in the stall doors. It makes a huge, huge, difference.

I just have 2 horses and a retired boarder…no one is riding this summer, so having the fans in the aisle is not a problem

![]( have the Air Kings, 20" similar to ldaziens.

On high setting they’re like a movie wind machine, LOL! Mine are hung from the rafters. You can angle them easily and the outlets they plug into are on a switch so no climbing ladders to turn them on or off. And the horses can’t reach them.

These are a LOT safer to run in a barn than a box fan. Box fans are pretty huge fire hazards. These can handle dust, humidity, etc. Just for safety’s sake I hit them with the leafblower often in summer. They’re not that expensive and worth every penny. Mine are over 8 years old and work like the day I bought them.

I bought a little one that’s angled up in the barn for my barn swallows a few years ago. I walked into the barn once on a wicked hot day (horses were in due to heat) and noticed that one of the horses had swallows lined up on his back/mane with their wings held away from their bodies. Enjoying the breeze. Had an “awwww” moment and then bought them their own fan.

(yes, I’m an idiot)

“Movie Wind Machine” is right. My poor mare with anhydrosis would put her face practically in one, and her mane would be blowing back exactly like a model.

An idiot would be the person that decided to get a bunch of turkeys and spends her summers trying to keep them cool with the afore mentioned fans along with multiple kiddie pools filled with cool water and blocks of ice and misters and sprinklers. There is NOTHING more pathetic than a hot bird, and especially a hot turkey.

It all comes down to how much money you want/can to throw at it. Box fans with bungees move plenty of air in almost applications. However IMO it is important to have an outlet at each stall and not run extension cords. It is also important to clean out around the motor “cooling intakes” with compressed air from time to time especially at the beginning of the season.
Most if not all barn/house fires can be avoided with proper maintenance and an understanding of what is being asked of the system in place. Cause and effect.

While I agree about not having box fans in the barn I shudder at horse shows. As far as the aisle goes you will see box fans and creative rigging involving multiple extension cords overloading circuits.

i use Air King to help keep my horse cool in the barn… it’s only been a few weeks, but so far so good! It’s an attractive fan with the power I need. Keeps the flies away, my turkeys and pigs have found a sweet spot near it, and it’s been wonderful on those 100 degree plus days
