what do you all like best?
i have been using thrush buster but am wondering if there is something that is more like a paste or a clay that might work better!
i have also used the “no thrush”’ in the white bottle, but wasn’t a fan of that.

Thrush Buster worked for me BUT my farrier had to show me how to stuff a small piece of cotton into the central sulcus and both sides of that into the collateral sulci. Once you have pushed the cotton pieces as deep as you can with your hoof pick into the three sulci, then you drip the Thrush Buster on to the cotton and hold the foot up as long as you can to allow the cotton to absorb the medication. In the dream world, the next day, you dig out the still medicated cotton from the sulci and replace with new cotton and fresh medicine. In reality, it usually falls out eventually.
My QH gets thrush more than any of my other horses (actually, don’t recall any of the other three having thrush, ever). Farrier says it’s because his sulci are deep.
Anyway, that’s what seems to work for me. My vet (now retired) swore by “strong iodine” done the same way to eliminate thrush; a mule riding gal-pal (also a farrier) prefers bleach.
But Thrush Buster seems to work for me --until Mr. Deep Sulci shows up with thrush again. FYI my horses are out 24/7 on great grassy pasture --can’t blame “dirty stalls” for the thrush.
This stuff. Comes with a built in hoof pick.
If that doesn’t cure it I do oxide soaks. I’ve been battling thrush with my pony. All this rain is not helping.
My farrier has me use Tomorrow (mastitis treatment for cows)…it did work really well for my gelding’s recent bad thrush. Easy to put on. I found a 3 pack at Amazon so I didn’t have to buy a case of 12, which seems to be how most places sell it.
Equiderma Thrush Treatment is my favorite product for treating thrush. I have not had luck with Thrush Buster with my current mare.
Artimud
Horse keeping in Hawaii came with a lot of mud. I used to have a 50/50 water, apple cider vinegar mix and would spray the soles of their feet. NO THRUSH. I also second Equiderma for a less salad like scent
I think the oxine soak followed by shoving something antibacterial/antifungal into the groove in the frog is the best way. The oxine soaks always seem to kill the thrush and then it’s just about getting the frog to grow out correctly.
There used to be a product with pre-soaked cotton rolls with thrush medication on them. I like those a lot.
This.
Best to keep any antibiotics for when it’s really needed, and it’s not usually needed for thrush. There’s a reason the Today/Tomorrow ointments have been put on the prescription-only list
I love Grooms Hand. It is like thrush buster on steroids, as it has tea tree oil. They also make another product for central sulcus thrush. I have not used it as I have not had terrible thrush walk into my barn in some time, the last time it did I combined the grooms hand with mastitis cream and that packed a powerful punch.
I have tried the Life Data clay and was not super impressed.
I did recently try Vetericyn/s thrush product and it has been decent.
I have a big bag of copper sulfate crystals and a wax toilet ring, and tried it after one of the local vets raved about it, but didn’t find that it ‘stuck’ super well. I may not have had my product ratios correct, but since I have the grooms hand, I did not try super hard either. lol.
Artimud hands down for helping to prevent but also general health and balance.
I use the powder you don’t like (No Thrush Powder) but pack it in using a layer of Artimud over it. I’m not sure which product is actually the effective one or if both are needed because I’ve always used both but the combo rehabbed my mare. You could also try a White Lightning soak to try to speed things up.
My horse is barefoot and I use Durasole pretty regularly (paint the entire bottom of his foot, frog, etc. with a generous amount) and that seems to keep everything dry, hard, and funk-free.
In between Durasole I like Pure Sole Hoof Mud.
My horse is (knock on wood) thrush free, but when I’ve had really bad cases (like…REALLY bad), I’ve used Tomorrow followed by packing with gauze and wrapping. It cleared it up.
Mostly I find making sure I pick the feet at least daily (often 2x/day) really well and getting all the junk out with pick and brush is the best practice to stay on top of any brewing issues. If things seem soft, Durasole. If things seem good but I’m wanting to do more than just pick, Pure Sole Hoof Mud. If things are super hard and dry and strong…yay!
I like to make a DIY Artimud with clay and honey and eucalyptus and tea tree oil (you could add copper too I think if you wanted) and shred some cotton balls and mix it all together. The cotton pieces are fantastic for filling butt crack frogs and keeping the ointment in there for a while. Way cheaper to DIY than buy. Seems equally effective. I also like a DIY spray - listerine + ACV + splash of nolvasan + water. Pick hoof, spray with listerine mix, pack with clay mix, done for a few days.
Ohhhh what’s your ratio of things? I don’t really have thrush issues, and do have a desitin/copper sulfate mix I use on a surgically removed canker area to help minimize the chances of it coming back, but would love to have a mixes like that as well
The dry powder, No Thrush. Occasionally I use Apple cider vinegar. Both work great!
