Favorite Utility Cart (For Hauling Hay)?

I’m in a self-care/co-op type boarding situation currently (sort of) with four total horses. The horses are normally out 24/7, either all together on 4.5 acres or split by pairs into two roughly 2 acre paddocks. Because all of my other co-boarders are students, I find that it is simpler for me to do all of the hay feeding (twice daily) in the winter. Call me a control freak, but I’ve found that the only way to ensure that appropriate amounts of hay are being doled out on a consistent schedule is to do it myself. I also prefer to spread the hay piles out, one or two flakes per pile, to facilitate movement and avoid mud holes and bullying. Hauling around approximately two square bales a day to accomplish this, however, is exhausting!

I’m looking for a four-wheeled utility type cart that I can load a bale of hay onto and then drag around the pasture with me to feed hay. It needs to be easy to pull by hand over varying terrain and large enough to easily hold a standard small square bale. Do any of you use something like this? Product recommendations? Hay feeding season around here doesn’t start until late October or early November, but I’m trying to plan ahead.

do a web search for “gorilla carts”… its a name brand … the big box things (Lowes/Home Depot/CostCo) will have them as well as Tractor Supply and others

The one I have is rated 1,200 pounds but I think I would need to harness the pony to it if I had that much in it.

Have had it for about a decade, replace tires every so often but we have a Harbor Freight less than a mile away so its no problem (for me).

I have one like this:

It really is the best thing ever except for deep mud and snow. The balance of the cart makes it easy for even a child to pull a hundred pounds or more. Which is why mine is in need of repair after 7 or 8 years…my kids hauled the hay and each other around the pasture. I wish I could figure out a way to put ski on the bottom for winter.

I got mine through my local Agway for about $125 but it was nearly impossible to find one. I can’t imagine why - I should make them and sell them.

Check the prices of these “upscale” versions - $800!

Thank you! These are great. I’ve been browsing through the big box stores but couldn’t tell from the online descriptions which ones could really handle farm work.

I use my rubbermaid farm cart for this–it holds two bales easily, could probably handle up to four.

Just recently saw them at Home Depot for $140, too, so the price has come down, or they’re on sale? Oh, yep–new lower price.

I have this same question actually.

I had seen one of these Agri-fab carts at a local Rural King for $150. As soon as my truck is done from the shop I’m going to go back and look at it again. Trying to decide how well it might work for me. I’ll have a similar need of carrying 1-2 bales at a time from a shed out to where the horses are.

And then thanks to this lovely forum, I got turned onto the idea of Ursa Wagons a few years ago. They have been my dream “gonna get one when I buy my farm!” cart\wagon. But now that I’ve done gone and bought the farm, I’m having to watch my pennies very carefully.

Either option can be hooked behind an ATV or tractor if the need arises (and with appropriate attachments).

Old thread but good info as I’m looking to replace my current cart that is falling apart. Bummed to see the Ursa Wagon is no longer being made. That looked like a good one.

well since updating, we have started using water troughs set on wagons to keep the hay off the ground, also provides easy relocation/movement of the hay if weather threatens… started using these when the miniatures were being turned out with the bigger guys to keep them away from the alfalfa… cart is Harbor Freight thing

How do you make the whole thing safe? What about the handle? Do you remove it when you leave it in the field? SOrry, grew up with TBs and they will look for things to get hurt on…

I recently purchased this one for moving hay around by hand and with the ATV. It is easy to pull by hand but if I was exclusively using it that way I would get the smaller version. This is SO much easier than any wheelbarrow! I can haul a few bales easily and more if I remove the sides.

This is the smaller version, I’m certain it would hold a full bale:

I have both of these and think either would work. Love how light weight (and small footprint for storing) the FoldIt Cart is. And the Rubbermaid is a great, super sturdy option (we can pile four bales on it when we’re packing hay in the shed).

*incidentally, I think both carts use the same size tires. I think it is these bigger tires that make them so useful wheeling out into the field.
