Favorite Westfalen Approved stallions

So we’ve been breeding TB racehorses for a few years now, and I’ve decided I’d like to breed one of our mares for a warmblood foal. I’m particularly fond of the Westfalens (Westphalians), since they are mainly what I rode when I lived in Germany as an exchange student as a teenager.

What are some of your favorite Westfalen approved sires?

The mare in question is a reg. TB, 16.3 hands. Her only real weak area is she’s a little light built behind, so I’d prefer stallions that have great hind ends. She has a lovely, lovely canter, a very nice TB trot. The walk could be longer and swingier. She has a fabulous temperament and was a decent racehorse. She’s more of a dressage/sport type of mover, so the sire can be more 'dressage-y" or a jumper type. If the foal came out a carbon copy of the mare, I’d still be thrilled.

thanks in advance

Sheila

Also, anyone have any experience with offspring of Freestyle? I really like him.

Sheila

Yes…I have one Freestyle gelding, now a yearling…and have a mare back in foal to him for 2015.
Elegant smart foals…mine is exceptionally ‘pretty’.
I have seen quite a few over the years…mostly very very nice.
As well I have ‘visited’ with Freestyle when I have been at Dreamscape Farm, and he is such a classy fellow!
Martha

Damon Hill:) And if you can get his frozen semen I’ll buy some too!!!

I have bred to Freestyle three times, and love him. One mare isn’t yet confirmed in foal but the other two foals were both elegant, with great movement. I just had a mare checked in foal to Furst Piccolo, a Westfalen I love.

Well, it’s looking like I wouldn’t be a fool to breed her to Freestyle! Sounds like he’s putting down some really lovely foals with good dispositions. I love the way he’s built and the way he moves. He has a substantial hind end (this mare’s weakest point) and from the pictures and videos that I’m seeing online, his babies seem to inherit that.

Thank you all for your input on him!

Sheila

If you want to go the more jumper route, what about Bliss MF? He is putting some lovely babies on the ground and according to his website is Westphalian approved.

OOOOhhh, Alliekat! Bliss MF! I like him a lot too! Maybe not so much for this particular mare, but OMG he would be a brilliant cross with my jumper mare! LOL I’m not sure I want to breed her next year, since she’s in foal to our stallion for a racing baby to foal early 2015, and I still want to ride her, but…so tempting!

Sheila

I have a Freestyle gelding out of their mare Pacific Sabra and it seems to me that the mare really comes through with Freestyle kids. My gelding is very “pretty” and refined looking. He’s also very smart. He is, however, very sensitive and insecure and I would not call him an “amateur” horse. I had him in full-time training and now part-time training and he really benefited from it. I posted a thread asking about his conformation on COTH before, if you search for that thread you can check out what he looks like.

Ludger Beerbaum has frozen semen available onhis stallion Escobar who sired the bundeschampionate winner Escolar. I was impressed by Escobar’s lineage for dressage (we don’t see much of the “E line” from Ehrentusch in the US, but it has produced horse like Etienne and seems to cross very ewell with the F line Westphalians and Hannoverians.I am thinking about using this stallion next year. I hear that this line has good rideability, talent and stands up to the demands of FEI work. And becaue we don’t have alot of this line in the US, if I get a filly, it opens up a lot of breeding possibilities.

Pablo

Pablo is probably one of the most successful too, Sire of nearly 20 licensed sons, dam sire of more licensed sons and over 70 Grand prix offspring, at 26 still healthy and getting the mares pregnant

Not sure my two cents worth apply here but here goes…lol.

Two stallions that have caught my interest as of late …

and

Furstenball

and if you check the lineup of his sons… Finest is impressive as well

Through either of these and a list of other approved sons, you are tapping into the Florestan blood who is also sire of Freestyle… these being perhaps in a slightly more modern style (just my opinion)
niether of which are specifically Westphalian, so probably not of much interest, but I fancy them currently and follow them a bit.

Also will say that Edgar has lovely stallions… Pablo being only one of them.
Dreamscape also has a lineup of very good stallions…Freestyle and in person you would love Sir Gregory, and so on… the list goes on.

Another of the Dreamscape Stallions that caught my eye was Diamond Stud who in this clip demonstrates an abundance of movement… and in my opinion, if you dilute that with a nice moving mare of less extravagance, you probably get something that is just about right…ha ha… In fact, I bought a breeding to him last year and gifted it to a lady who had done a lot of nice favors for me as of late, so they are anxiously awaiting that foal to arrive any day. Check out Mr. Fancy Pants himself… Diamond Stud…

Diamond Hit was not only a highly regarded stallion but he was known to have excellent feet which is another point to consider on a thoroughbred mare, as in general they are not always known for having the best feet… nothing personal intended by this remark…

What impressed me a great deal when I was at Dreamscape was seeing Freestyle just hanging out in a paddock with a gelding buddy next to him, and he seemed so quiet and laid back. Have always liked him and many breeders do as well.

Regardless of who you choose, be sure you are not having issues with border crossing and shipping as rumor has it, it has become a bit more difficult as of late… and don’t quote me on that… just do your homework.

There… my thoughts …for what they may be worth…ha ha ha

There are many fantastic stallions out there. Using a thoroughbred mare you might be wise to consider stallions who have produced successful eventers, if you wish to market the foal later on.

Fidertanz is another stallion who has been very popular. So many, naming just one seems to be almost unfair, but choose what appeals to you and all the best for a safe healthy pregnancy.

You may also note by my choices that I seem to be stuck on black stallions at the moment… Yes, a bit, but a good horse is a good horse regardless of color.

and in closing, if you would just like to “drool a while”, check out this beautiful presentation of a website and farm breeding business… Oh my…

There is also Florianus II at Iron Spring Farm.

Also - it’s been a while since I dealt with the Westfalen registry, but it was my understanding that the Westfalens would accept a foal sired by a stallion that is fully approved by another German registry (probably also KWPN) - as long as the MARE held Westfalen registration papers.

IOW, to register a foal as Westfalen, either the sire or dam must hold Westfalen registration papers.

For a jumper the best sire, by far, is actually Cornet Obolensky.
I’m not sure if you can actually get semen.

Down Yonder, you are correct.

Another GOV stallion who is also approved Westfalen
highly regarded as a young sire (dressage)
