Fecal Water Syndrome/Stemmy Hay/Laminitis Risk

On the butyric acid, I came across this article tonight that talks about it helping FFWS. The TractGuard I have contains it though I didn’t realize it was so important when I bought it.

WaterWerks is on the home splash page for Horsetech. Now convenient for the midnight shoppers!

Yes, it’s one reason Triple Crown and Blue Seal (and I’m sure some others) add it to their products, as it helps with the health of the intestinal lining, which is important in controlling nutrient passage (leaky gut) as well as water reabsorption (ffws). That doesn’t mean it WILL help, since the problem isn’t always the intestines, or something you can fix. But any time you can support intestinal health, it’s a good thing

Did anyone else watch the Penn State Webinar??

:poop: :poop: :poop:

yup. I was hoping for more detailed info about what to do about it, but it was helpful to learn more about the underlying and overall issue.

Same. I guess it confirms that there is still a lot to figure out with it. Glad it’s being looked into more and more though.

I had to take the barn kitty to the vet and missed it. Do you know if they recorded it?

Yes! They said they should have it available in the next week or two if I recall correctly.

Checking in, looking for clean butt updates.
My gelding is doing much better. We don’t even have to wash him every day. Some days he’s clean, some days it’s a minor problem that can be curried off. Even his worst days are not the level of nasty that he was previously. So I’m a WaterWerks fan.

But my barn buddy is not having the same level of success. It’s not unusual for him to have 4-5 squirts in the 90 minutes it takes her to pull him from his paddock, groom, ride and put away.

What’s working for all of you?

My mare came down with Potomac Fever and her fecal water went away after the OxyTet. Sadly, it came back today. So, we are starting back on 2 weeks of Sand Clear and then trying Assure Guard Gold.

We are still doing pretty good on (FFW helpers in bold):
1C Beet Pulp 2X/day
1 serving Cal Trace Plus 2X/day
1.75 ounces of Apple a Day Electrolytes 2X/day
1 serving Platinum GI 2X/day
1 serving TractGuard PM
2 flakes Timothy/teff/mixed grass hay 2X/day
2.5 - 3 oz teff hay pellets from auto feeder every hour from 8AM - 5PM

For higher stress events like hauling or vet stuff I am also adding in a serving of Platinum Balance. A couple weeks back he needed a shot of Dex for some eye puffiness. The FFW started back very lightly on and off for 1-2 weeks so I’m guessing that messed with the good stuff in his gut? We have to get our vaccines split up for fall and he will be on banamine for that so I am going to be ready with the extra Platinum Balance and cross my fingers.

I’ve been following along with this thread as I have a 28 year old Morgan mare who has been having fecal water issues off and on since her buddy died last December (she was still turned out with other horses, but the mare we lost was the herd boss and that really disrupted things). She went off her feed for a week or so after losing her buddy; once we got her eating again, she would go through waves of having projectile squirting water for days at a time, which would then ease up, but always come back. Spring grass got her feeling better for a couple of months. Now that we’re at the time of year that our grass is really just brain entertainment rather than their main forage, we’re back in the squirting water cycle. I’m nervous because this year’s hay is the stemmiest I’ve ever had. And we were lucky to get that, so we will have to feed it this winter. I know this is going to cause issues for my mare.

Talking all this over with the vet last week, she advised to try the Platinum Performance GI. I’ve been feeding it for 2 days so far and crossing my fingers it’s going to help.

Just joining in here to commiserate with others going through this. I am dreading another winter of poo-frozen blankets :frowning:

I hope the PPGI helps you out! I started with chia seeds first, then psyllium husk powder, the Platinum Balance on its own, which didn’t do much at all for us. I tried the PPGI and that seemed to be the biggest help. I do think it helps being able to keep something in his stomach at all times even if it can’t be free choice hay. Then I would have another issue!

I hope everyone is having more luck than we are at the moment. I’m trying the water werks now, it’s been a week and no difference yet.

One day it’s not terrible, the next he has poop trails on his flanks from what’s in his tail.

Now he has cow patty piles along with the fecal water. Vet wants me to try assure guard gold but he’s already on 1 cup psyllium am/pm along with the waterwerks so I don’t know… It’s so expensive to try if it doesn’t work.

Sorry to hear you aren’t having luck yet. Everything I’ve seen from the nutritionist side of things says to keep at it for a couple weeks at least.

Forgive me if you posted this before, did you try probiotics or butyric acid yet? If you did any luck?

@FjordBCRF, yes, he’s been on FasTrack probiotic pack for at least 8 months now.

Butryic acid is in the waterwerks so it’s only been a week for that.

I keep hoping it will get better. This morning his legs and tail were a poopy mess again.

He doesn’t seem bothered at all but I’m getting a little tired of washing butts. And with winter coming it’s becoming a fuzzier and messier situation by the day. :joy:

Well crap! No pun intended. Could be he needs a bit of time with it. When Charlie had to have a shot of dex for his allergies the FW came back a bit and resolved in a couple weeks again.

We had a breakthrough morning today. With being on daytime turnout with fly gear, we had a warmer day yesterday AND a new roundbale. I took his fly gear off minus the face mask and boots to help cut the heat; after today it’s gets much more mild again. He also got some extra Platinum Balance and TractGuard so hopefully that will help.

I hope he clears up soon. He doesn’t look nearly as fuzzy as Leif but they do get hot.

I took Leif off Prascend as a test. It’s been 3 days since his last dose and the diarrhea has stopped. The vet is coming for fall shots the 19th and I’ll talk to her about it then.
