Feed bag users...

I love using my feedbags. I have a couple of different brands (Cashel Fees Rite and Tough One), some are canvas some are mesh. I like them pretty equally. Buckets and/or pans don’t work as my guys are out 24/7 and some are flingers, others are tippers, all are piggies so I have to make sure everyone gets their stuff, not theirs and whoever else’s they can bully out of them.
My only problems with using them is feeding powders and oils creates a mess and the usual rips at the seams.
I often wonder if I could “paint” something around them to make them more durable? More waterproof? Something to coat the bottoms with.
Any suggestions?

I remember a bunch of people fashioning those squishy buckets, Tub Trugs ? into ‘feed bags’ because of this issue…

Excellent idea! Thanks!!

When I lived in NZ our feed came in those nylon weave bags. I would fold them in half, punch a hole for string and use them as nose bags. When they got dirty I just made a new one.

Some supplement buckets are the right size to shove inside a mesh feed bag. Cut off the top so it is shorter than the mesh sides and push it all the way to the bottom of the bag- they have a nice clean eating surface with no leaks, and it won’t rub their faces. It can be tricky to find the right size bucket, but they are out there.

I’m surprised you’re having problems with the Cashel hard bottom bags. Before I found those, I put small black rubber tubs in the bags. Just know some horses will use them as projectiles and whack their buddy in the head to try to get their food.
