Posting this for a friend who just picked up a pregnant TB mare at a feedlot.
We don’t know why she was dumped there but she is in good weight and has a nice shiny coat.
My friend is not a breeder so right now she is trying to figure this all out!
If anyone could share their feed program that would give her some ideas.
Thanks!!
Is she going to deliver soon, as in this year? Or likely not until early next year I’m assuming she looks pregnant, so at least 7-ish months along?
I would put her on a good low sugar feed designed for this. Triple Crown Sr is actually awesome for pregnant mares. I personally don’t like that TC changed the Growth formula to have more oats, increasing its NSC to 18-19%, but it’s not the worst choice out there.
Ultium Growth is also acceptable.
If that’s too many calories, then a ration balancer is perfect. Feeding rates for the later term pregnant mares are higher than non-pregnant horses. If she’s sort of in between the calorie needs that a RB and a regular feed provide, then a RB and alfalfa pellets is easy and good.
I feed Triple Crown Senior. Until they are late term the levels they get remain the same as they were getting before. The mares have free forage (on pasture and now additional hay as the grass is dwindling). I also keep them on Platinum, but a good feed like the TC Senior doesn’t require a feed balancer (vitamins/minerals). All my horses are on Platinum and I didn’t want to change their routine from pre-pregnancy. Once they are later term I will increase their feeding amounts to slightly higher levels as I will also have to take her off pasture (since there is a good percentage of fescue). It’s about quality over quantity, so that needs are met.
Thanks for the help!
