I have to pick a new feed as mine is now no longer in the area. I was looking at pro force fuel as many like it for their hard keeping ottbs, but when I looked at the fiber, it was basically identical (fiber is listed before fuel in each example) except for the vit A which is 5000 vs 4000IU/lb, fiber which is max 16% vs max 10%, calories per # is 1545 vs 1593 and the fiber has no corn vs fuel which has corn. Looking at this, it would seem the Fiber would be the better choice but am I wrong in assuming that? They also both equal 20% NSC just one has a higher percentage in the starch with the other having the higher in the sugar. Everything else is listed the same between the two. Thoughts?
Anyone have an opinion?
The main difference between the two is the ingredients. Pro Force Fiber utilizes beet pulp but Fuel does not. I’ve had extensive conversations with the nutritionists at Cargill and with my own vets about these feeds.
They are very similar feeds. You can look at the rest of your horse’s diet to determine which might be best for you.
I have a “formerly hard keeper”. I used to feed Fiber, but I was also feeding beet pulp and the horse was on good pasture. His normal fiber intake was already good and the Pro Force Fiber was redundant. On advice, I switched to Fuel. Over time, I was able to cut out the beet pulp and lessen the amount of grain fed. My horse is on good pasture and gets great fiber and nutrients, and I was able to cut back on the Fuel because he was … chubby. I’m sure I’ll increase again as winter envelops us.
Note, these are both “complete feeds”, which means that as fed by direction, they deliver the vitamins, minerals, nutrients a horse needs. If you have bad turnout or bad hay, you might want to feed closer to the recommendations. If you have good pasture and good hay, they supplement the diet and you can feed less if your horse gets chubby. These are excellent feeds for hard keepers because they have a high fat content - one of the highest on the market.
I haven’t fed the fiber but I’ve been feeding the Fuel for several months now.
Really like the results I’ve seen.
I chose the Fuel as I feed really good timothy & also pasture. Plus I chose the Fuel due to the lower sugar even though NSC are same with both.
Thank you both!
Got the Fiber. Thank you for your help! Just started switching her over tonight so crossing fingers that she will like it and it will work for her once completely switched over. I don’t think I have ever been so excited about a feed change, lol. High hopes on this one!
