Any suggestions to to keep the slugs out of my cat food? Clearly I can’t bring the feral in (true feral, not happening) but the slugs are HUGE. Some over 6 inches. And last night, there were 8, 8 in the cat bowl all at once. Salt failed me, but then we had a rainstorm, so it might have just gotten washed away.
This article is for gardeners, but it looks like there are some tips that might work for your cat food slugs, too. I like the beer one http://www.organicauthority.com/organic-gardening/organic-gardening/know-your-enemy-the-slug.html
I saw that! I tried again with salt as I don’t have anything else handy. Fingers crossed this helps. I don’t necessarily want to kill them, just not have them eat my feral food!
Slugs are disgusting. Try bran - I used to throw a handful or so down and when they eat dry bran it puffs up in them and kills them. Salt is also good. Could you put cat food up somewhere they can’t get but kitty can? I am forced to have washer/dryer in outside detached garage and I put the bowl up there.
I also feed during certain times and don’t like to leave food out overnight as it attracts skunks and possums. Not that I don’t like those critters but A) I’m not going broke making THEM fat and I don’t want them taking up residence in my garage. I think few things are more horrifying than coming home late at night and finding a possum that easily weighed 20 lbs lolling on my washer.
My ferals learned pretty quick when feeding time was.
Get a small table at Goodwill or St Vinnies or turn over a holey water trough for a feeding table for the cats.
Take up the food overnight.
-Slug bait is highly toxic to pets, so don’t go there.
Why do you feed feral cats. They are an invasive species and not good for the environment. They should be caught and neutered or exterminated. I have a person down the road feeding them and the population is out of control, now it is my problem when they come down here. No rabies shot and not fixed, I don’t need them around my cats that are fixed and up to date with their shots.
