Feeding the IBS dog

my 12 year old corgi has always had a sensitive stomach, but lately she’s just having a horrible time of it. Lots of bloating, a never ending cycle of constipation and diarrhea, etc… yesterday we ended up at the vet (again) because I was actually concerned she had a blockage. Vet was worried too, so we took some rads. No blockage, and left with a diagnosis of IBS.

Any advice for feeding the IBS dog that doesn’t include a raw diet? She’s just so miserable. I’ve tried most of the high quality kibble for dogs with sensitive stomachs over the years, finally settling on a diet of canned senior Blue Buffalo and green beans made into a soup, with probiotics added, but even that’s not working very well anymore. Argh.

Thanks!

I know your pain. A 95 pound dog with explosive diarrhea is no fun at all. Check the label of your kibble. Start by avoiding corn products. Exceed brand Lamb & rice without corn, soy, and wheat have worked for me. I get it at Sam’s club.

Are you open to freeze dried? I like Stella and Chewy’s. Otherwise, I’d look at home cooked

Have you tried Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach?

Look into Tylan Powder. It’s a chicken antibiotic that is often used in dogs for digestive issues. That’s what our vet had us try when our one dog had the guesstimate diagnosis of IBD. We weren’t going to biopsy to be sure. It took about a month to fully work. We’ve always fed a raw diet, but she can now eat almost anything. She gets 3/8 tsp twice a day.

Marshfield, if I may ask what is freeze dried? I believe I have tried the Pro Plan, I think let me go google the bag to see… I’ll google the exceed while I"m at it.

Where does one get Tylan Powder, is it a prescription type thing?

Tylan prescription. Raw can be purchased frozen or freeze dried with is easier to store and less “icky”

I have a couple links I will share with you. One is feed related and I highly recommend this food. My dog would throw up or get the poops on kibbles and while I am ok with raw he eats at more then just home so I went with this food. https://www.thehonestkitchen.com/
The next link is a vet who is about education on alternative methods and I have learned a great deal from her. http://www.drjudymorgan.com/forum/
