Feeding two geldings Nutrena mare and foal?

I have a weird and possibly stupid question…

I have a friend who is currently feeding Nutrena to two geldings Mare and Foal each day.

1 of them had foundered on all four hooves about 8 years prior in a different home… is this going to affect the horse? He is a easy keeper and as far as I know, doesnt need that supplement? No veterinarian has requested this to be done as well.

I do not know the history on the second gelding.

Thank you for taking your time reading and/or replying to this.

I would not feed a mature gelding a feed for mares and foals. The Nutrena Mare and Foal feed (if that is the brand you are referring to) is 22.0% NSC, which I would consider high (it has 17% starch). So, no, I would not give this feed to a grown gelding that is prone to founder.

And, just a tip, your post title and contents w/o the manufacturer name makes it sound like your friend is feeding mares and foals to two geldings. So, you might want to stick the name brand in there to avoid confusion!

That’s what I thought!

I believe the brand is Nutrena.

They are in fact giving this supplement to two different geldings.

I was trying to focus on the one who had foundered in the past.

sorry!

Nutrena Mare and Foal Horse Feed is a complete feed, not a “supplement”. But there are probably other manufacturers that have “Mare and Foal” in the name. So, I think you might need to know what the actual full name of the product is to be sure. But still, I wouldn’t feed any feed designed for lactating/pregnant mares and growing foals to an adult/mature gelding that’s prone to founder (or any gelding for that matter) - unless directed to do so by a vet because of some nutritional deficiency that vet has identified. But that’s just me.

And no need to be sorry! It was my misunderstanding. When I read “gelding on mare and foal” I wasn’t thinking horse feed, that’s for sure! :o
