Fenbendazole -- Deciding Which Instructions to Follow on Abler Product

I’m aware of the standard protocol of 5 days of double dosing for fenbendazole for encysted strongyles.

On the Abler website, there are alternate instructions for treatment.

The red instructions refer to the classic “power pack” treatment approach.

The blue instructions indicate that a greater amount of the wormer, given on one day, will accomplish the same results.

The green instructions indicate that an even larger amount of wormer, given on one day, will accomplish better results.

I can’t find any info on the interwebz about the blue and green treatments.

Can anyone advise, please? Thank you. [TABLE=“class: data-table, width: 0”]

If could be wrong, but I think if dont you don’t double dose you are not going to get tape worms, and if you don’t do it for 5 days you’re not going to get encysted strongyles.

How about asking your vet, who has professional knowledge? It might even save you some money if you need to use less rather than more.

Uh, no. The five day dose is what you want.

OR, you could simply use the proper weight dose of Quest Plus, and get tapes, and encysted strongyles.

I know you weren’t asking about this, this is just for general info, but don’t even bother with single doses anymore. You need to prove with reduction testing that it works on a given farm, so until you’re in a position with a high enough count to even do that, assume it’s useless.

I actually did find reference to 60mg/kg in a single dose in several places, BUT, in the context of migrating stages, not encysted stages.

Most of them I couldn’t actually find the text - you know how you see what you want in the search results, but when you click on the link, it’s not there? I don’t know how to dig deeper in some of these science sites :frowning:

But I did find an entire only book - Equine Clinical Pharmacology - which DOES have it spelled out that you can do the 10mg/kg for 5 consecutive days, OR 60mg/kg as a single dose for migrating stages. It still says
http://docshare04.docshare.tips/files/17200/172001649.pdf

I also found this
https://wormers-direct.co.uk/content/datasheets/Panacur%20Equine%20Granules.pdf
which has

"Five day course: For the treatment and control of migrating larval stages of large strongyles and encysted mucosal 3rd and 4th stage larvae and inhibited 3rd stage small strongyle larvae (encysted) in the mucosa, administer 5g Panacur Equine Granules per 150kg bodyweight daily for 5 days. (= 7.5mg fenbendazole/kg bodyweight daily for 5 days)

Single dose treatments: For the treatment and control of encysted mucosal stages of small strongyles, administer 20g Panacur Equine Granules per 150kg bodyweight. (= 30mg fenbendazole/kg bodyweight)

For the treatment and control of migrating stages of large strongyles, administer 40g Panacur Equine Granules per 150kg bodyweight. (= 60mg fenbendazole/kg bodyweight)"

So that ^^ says the normal 5 day course, but also says a single dose of 30mg/kg works for encysted stages. I don’t know why the 60mg/kg dose doesn’t also say for encysted.

what I can’t find/access are studies showing that actually works (assuming no resistance)

It’s double pyrante pamoate which kills tapeworms

sadly, most vets have little to know education on this :frowning:

yes, but some horses can’t have moxidectin, so must rely on fenbendazole

Thanks to all that responded. JB – you are a treasure.

I/we need to do some more math and digging, as I went back to look at things and that last link is for the granules. But the granules seem to be 22% fen, and the paste and liquid are both 10%, so…

Ok but never mind, because it states that the dosage is still 60mg/kg body weight of fenbendazole, and that’s in a 40gm/150kgBW dose of the product (the granules). And, the Abler is the granules - I assume 22% fen as well?

Personoally, I don’t know what to think.
