Fence Height for Ponies

Hi,

We are looking at getting 2 ponies that are both below 12 hands tall. Will our 4-foot fence be tall enough? Our 2 minis are kept in a large paddock with a 4ft fence, and we were hoping to be able to just keep these new ponies with them (after they are introduced, of course).

Thank You!

My 17.1hh horse perfectly respects a 3’ electric tape. Assuming they aren’t escape artists or crazy bold jumpers your 4’ should be just fine!

I’d think 4’ would be just fine for two 12h ponies. My small/medium pony does just fine with a shorter fence. But, he’s never shown much of an interest in jumping.

As mentioned…4’ high will be just fine.

What kind of fencing?
We have split rail - only 2 rails - and I had to move the electric down about a foot as the two little ones were squeezing through the rails. Gotta love ponies!

We have 2 different paddocks both with wood posts and one has 4ft no-climb horse fence pannels (this makes it really tough and tight, so no sagging), and the other has 4ft no-climb horse fence from a roll (so not as tight) with wood boards on the outside about a foot apart. We do not have electric fence.

My pony is 12 hands give or take an inch and his paddock fencing is 4 ft. Hope that helps.

Ours is 4’6. The 12.1 pony I had as a kid jumped out on a pretty much daily basis. None of the others were ever an issue. So I’d say it depends on the pony.

My 38" mini showed me (for my edification) that he could clear our 48 inch no-climb fence from a standstill. Since that demonstration, he has never jumped out. Our 34" mini plays limbo and goes under the fence at any opportunity.

It all depends upon the horse.

Hot wire at top and bottom of no-climb adds incentive to stay within the fence.

 Mini jumper class for him (they have those you know)? I knew minis could jump, some quite handily, but that’s crazy! He must have pogo sticks for legs! I guess, where there’s a will, there’s a way? Or maybe he was just showing off. lol
