I’m in the process of adopting two minis (8-9 hands) as companion ponies. I will be building a dry lot for them outside their stall. All of my fencing is three board oak, I’m worried they might be able to escape this! Does anyone keep minis with this type of fencing? Help!
We have several miniature horses in our stable yard and have found that we are happiest with them in no-climb welded wire fencing. One of the minis chews wood posts and we had to run electric wire along the inside of the welded wire to keep him from doing that.
I’ve found that it depends on the horse as to what fencing works best. We tried our little boarders out in wood board fencing and they tried their level best to crawl through it - and these are not tiny minis.
The safety and security of the woven wire fence with very strong posts lets me sleep at night.
Can you add no climb to their area? I have mini donks that size with no climb with a sight board for the big horses.
Another vote for no-climb!
My 35" guy was fine with my coated tensile, until the day he wasn’t.
I don’t know if he was chased, or just limboed beneath it. Posts had heaved a bit, lifting the bottom wire enough for his fat self.
I added Redbrand no-climb stapled on the posts & 3yrs later, no more escapes.
My mini (32 1/2") has been gone awhile, but when he first came home, we had three board fencing at the front of the paddocks, the lowest board maybe 18" off the ground. He wasn’t there two weeks before he crawled out under the boards. We fixed it by adding a hot wire 12" off the ground.
But yeah, I’d for sure go for the no-climb. Those little buggers can get out of the most amazing places, and mine would test the hot wire on a daily basis.
The bottom of my bottom boards are 12” off the ground so maybe I will be ok! There is 9” of space in between the bottom and middle boards.
With only 12” at the bottom, I think you’ll be ok. My fencing is all electric and my mini blasts through it. Her pen is fenced with electric netting. I like that option because I can move it to adjust the size of the area she has to graze. Minis are great, have fun!
