Fever with spring shots?

We have several horses who got their second round of spring shots yesterday and have 101-102 fevers today. Eating OK, just hot. Anyone else having reactions? Right now, it is about 1/3 of our 34 horses. Vet says banamine and they have seen this. Should resolve by tomo.

Yep, two of the horses (including mine) at my barn had reactions.

It’s pretty typical. Just watch for anything more abnormal; worsening injection site pain/swelling, going off feed, laminitis symptoms… usually it just goes away, though. NSAIDs help.

No I am not an anti-vaccine person. But I do think that you should do things one at a time, and consider what they’ve had in the past and their age group. Just my two cents

Not unusual. You ARE doing something to simulate the immune system.

This year, yes. Extreme lethargy with no appetite in the draft. Additionally, the pony had a mild bit of colic. Banamine did the trick for her. The big guy I just watched, all of my emergency Banamine having been shoved into the pony’s protesting mouth. Now I keep enough on hand to do both of them at maximum doses and lose some!
Never had any issues previously. I think it may be that we have added a couple new shots (Lepto and Lyme) and it is just too much, next year I’ll split them up. I’d rather have the extra farm call than colic!

Lyme? Is there an equine Lyme vaccine? Or are you using the canine version?

Several at my barn. Ok after a couple days. The worst were the few with necks so sore they couldn’t eat off the ground.

Normal range for adult horses at rest are 99-101F. I wouldn’t balk at 101-102F. Keep an eye on them to make sure they are well hydrated and eating. If they stop eating, or spike a higher fever, then call your vet. Keep in mind you are stimulated their body to make antibodies to develop defenses against certain things.

I have never had anything but injection site reactions, mild swelling. I have never experienced any other kind of reaction to vaccinations, for both vet administered and me personally administering the injection.
