Field Hunter "Must Call" List in Virginia/MidAtlantic

Hello all!

I have been reading the forums for a little while now, and have really enjoyed all of the thoughtful posts and information contained on this board.

In a recent post inquiring about the horses at Snowbound Acre Farm (which I believe to be in Virginia), it was mentioned they should definitely be on the “must call” list when shopping for a field hunter. I was curious what the other farms would be on that list, as I am currently in the market for a field hunter and am very appreciative of any suggestions!

Thank you so much and I’m actually really excited to be making my first post on the coth board~!!!

I would recommend that you look up Virginia Field Hunters and Merle-Smith Eventing. I bought my Shire x TB mare from them in 2004, and we are currently in our eighth year of hunting; I couldn’t be more pleased with her. I know that they have had quite a number of very nice horses paired with happy customers.

holdhard, thanks for the suggestion to check out Virginia Field Hunters! I have come across them in my research and they are definitely somewhere I will be checking out soon!

They post here, I would imagine she will be popping up soon. One of the other whippers in in our hunt purchased a horse from them two season ago, and the mare is a lovely horse. Nice big draftx mare, does a great job whipping in and her owner loves her.
I’ve never seen anything that wasn’t lovely come out of that place

So that’s definitely on the list! Sounds like people who have gotten horses from them are very happy, thanks for the recommendation!

I second this! I was shopping in October, and Bonnie took me around and showed me several very nice horses. One of our stops was at Elysian Hills, and I ended up buying “Phoenix” from Cynthia Brickley. I am absolutely thrilled with him. He’s a 4 year old 1/4 Belgian, 3/4 Thoroughbred. I hunted him the rest of the season here in NH, and he is an absolute gentleman. No one can believe he is 4. Looking forward to many years ahead of both hunting and eventing with him. I highly recommend both Bonnie and Cynthia.
