Fifth wheel hitch - gooseneck converter for horse trailer

Has anyone used a converter on fifth wheel hitches to be able to haul a gooseneck trailer? Are they safe?

Are you talking about changing the 5th wheel on the trailer to a gooseneck? Yes, we have done that with an 18K fifth wheel camper using a Ranch Hitch Adaptor. Hauled camper all over Alaska in some challenging road conditions with no issue.

If you are talking about turning a gooseneck ball in the truck into a 5th wheel hitch, then yes, we have done that, also. We have a B&W turnover ball with the Companion 5th wheel hitch.

We have also dropped the gooseneck on the horse trailer and installed a fifth wheel kingpin, but had to scrap the idea because it was impossible to get the trailer to ride level. The Companion in the truck was too “high” to allow the trailer to ride level, even with shortening the king pin to the max.

All of the above “adaptors” are safe if used and installed PROPERLY.

My guess would be that they are safe if properly designed and manufactured. If I were going to do this I’d shop around and find out who makes the best quality for the best price and proceed from there.

I have a fifth wheel hitch in my truck. The horse trailer I am purchasing is a gooseneck. So I’m contemplating using a fifth wheel - gooseneck converter where I have a plate that clips into my fifth wheel hitch but has a gooseneck attachment. So it wouldn’t change anything on the horse trailer.

I have seen those advertised in catalogs, but have never personally used one or seen one in use.

You may have the same problem we had, which is that trying to use the 5th wheel hitch in the truck made the trailer sit WAY nose high, even on the lowest possible setting. Goosenecks are designed to set down flush with the bed of the truck, while most 5th wheel hitches are designed to accommodate the trailer MUCH MUCH higher off the bed of the truck. That distance can be difficult or impossible to accomplish and still keep the gooseneck trailer level.

You may have more luck removing the fifth wheel and installing what moving to dc has…

It’s what I’m considering, honestly, as a consideration when I install a gooseneck hitch in my truck later this year.

I hadn’t considered that but it makes sense. My last truck had a B&W gooseneck hitch but someone suggested the converter.

That was originally my plan. I don’t need the 5th wheel hitch, it just was already installed in the truck. But a new gooseneck hitch was $700 while the converter was $190 so I figured I would at least research it. Whatever I do needs to be safe and sound, but figured I should at least ask about whether anyone had experiences with the converters.
