Fighting over pipe stalls. Adding Screen?

I have 3, 10x20 temporary pipe stalls that I’ve had for 4 years and never had an issue. I’ve had 2 mares get a back leg hung up over the top in the last 6 months.

They have good solid plywood attached to both sides, so their legs can’t get through. I know these stalls exist in many places, so surely someone has come up with a sturdy affordable solution to prevent this from happening again? I was thinking maybe one of those shade sail cloth affixed some how?

Pictures would be super helpful! Thank you guys!

If they are fighting I would prefer to separate them altogether. Even if it meant moving the stalls and adding more panels as we did move our pens several times and reconfigure them, they ended up as runs off the shedrow barn. We had two 16X16 pens sharing a common panel and they would play halter tag or the pony would harass the older horse and would climb up the pipes to do it, so we added 3/4 plywood to his side and that stopped that.

If either one of them had been kickers or they really hated their next door neighbor then the important thing is to either separate them or make the wall solid and I would hesitate letting the fronts stay open either. Moving the pens so they didn’t share a common panel but instead had a walkway in between might have helped but it depends on just how interested they are at kicking out at that neighbor.

I don’t know how tall your tube/pipe panels are, but if the plywood goes to the top, I’d simply use 2X4s and plywood or 2x4s and a good heavy duty no climb to extend the top a good 2’ 6".

But I think moving the stalls apart as @ReSomething suggested is a better idea - but if this isn’t possible, go to plan B and make the shared “wall” much taller.

If you have standard 4’ x 8’ sheets of plywood, you could turn plywood in the other direction, add more sheets and have an 8’tall division between those horses.

I like that idea! I might give it a shot. The only minor concern I have, is that even though the witchy mares can be feisty towards their neighbors, at the same time they would freak out if they couldn’t see another horse lol. Hmmmm…

Maybe leave a little gap between panels, large enough to see, not so large they want to fight, about 2" or 3" at most?

Not sure what would work, just try only what seems safe and while someone is watching.

If they tend to kick out in a certain area, think about adding a light rubber mat to that spot.
They have 1/2" trailer mats up to 4’ x 6’ that would not be too heavy and help protect if someone kicks.

Some times, just putting something solid the first part of the division between stalls, where the feed is, helps.
They don’t seem to fight over the rest of the wall as much.

Guess you can’t switch horses around so those two are not near each other?

I haven’t had to separate the horse body parts over my pipe panel stalls, but I do have to separate one of the hay bays from one of the horses.

Buy a couple of chain link sections for dog kennels. Ask Lowes or Home Depot if they have any that are too damaged for kennel use and will therefore discount.

We attached them at the bottom to the pipe panel with heavy duty plastic ties, and DH made wire “strings” to attach to the tops of the panels and run up to the rafter, since the panels wouldn’t reach up to the rafters.

The chain link sections are plenty strong enough to keep the mares teeth and hooves where they belong, provided the humans tightly secure them, and the chain link still lets the air circulate:)
