FIie 3H equine hospital /house burns NC

3H Equine Hospital in the Triangle (New Hill) NC burned down last night. People and animals are all safe but the most beautiful and state of the art hospital with every treatment option is gone.
Hard to understand how it burned as barn even ceiling were concrete and every fire prevention technique was in use.
Dr Fernando Cardenas lost his surgery/barn and his home. Amazing all survived.
I just wanted the Chronicle community to know . If you knew him or had seen this Hospital you would understand the tragedy even though no life was lost.
He is also outstanding horseman , was in Pan Am games .

I was stunned reading this in the local news this morning. It is horrible. They will bounce back in time, but how devastating for all involved. In addition to the equine hospital they of course operated an extensive mobile vet business. It will be difficult but I hope that can continue to some degree while they get through this tragedy. Not sure where the Triangle area would be without 3H.

 For the vet & his staff.
Glad no animals were lost.

Local QH breeders lost their barn & home, 3 boaders’ horses, 1 of their own & have a mare recovering from burns at the vet college hospital.
So far donations are coming in from several sources, a fundraiser is scheduled & one little girl raised $1K by herself, selling lemonade & pumpkins.
I hope the local horse community in NC rallies as fast to help.

I turned on WRAL at 6 this morning and was shocked to see this. The video is just awful. And the shot of what’s left of the front stairs that led to their amazing living space. I’m still kind of shocked.

Someone has mentioned that their mobile vet trucks were saved but of course all that equipment and the supplies are destroyed. And all the tack in that tack room. I’m so glad that the horses were all taken out and the family is safe. And the dogs!

I remember when Fernando was working out of his house in Cary. He had built quite a practice since those days and now will have to rebuild.

Oh wow. So glad to hear no one (animal or human) was injured.

Since I hadn’t seen anything about this on the news around me, here’s the link

Thank you for the link to the article @mommy_peanut. That article explains why it was such a huge loss (lack of water supply, having to truck in water).

How tragic. Jingles!

This was not just a barn this was a surgery an equine hospital and rehab center with treadmills and all sort of specialized equipment. It was also beautiful ,think of the most lovely set up in Kentucky.
So lucky they got out as the house was on top of the barn. All of us with stables should be concerned as no place could have been built more fire safe and kept so clean.
Dr Cardenas and his team were always available in any emergency and well I am to upset to continue but this was an amazing place .
They did lose a dog and some cats, hoping the cats just fled to the woods.
Also don’t most of us have well water not fire hydrants. When my house near by was hit by ligthening it took 40 minutes for the fire trucks to arrive and they told me they would always be to late to save the house .This is not rural only 5 minutes from town.

I am thankful to have public water.

No piped gas, no piped sewers, and no high speed internet. But public water with a hydrant right across from my house>

It takes the local all volunteer fire department a bit to get to my house too. We are at the very edge of three different departments, so when they do show up, they show up in mass.

There is a GoFundMe page set up for 3H and Dr. Cardenas. Insurance will likely cover the building and much of the equipment that was lost but there will no doubt be unexpected expenses that insurance doesn’t touch.

Hopefully this is allowed. Guess I better go read the forum rules… If not I will delete!

ETA: If I understood correctly fundraising is only allowed for 501©(3) organizations, except in special circumstances approved by moderators. Does this qualify? @Moderator_1 Please advise, I want to play by the rules. :slightly_smiling_face:

that photograph in the Go Fund Me really shows a lot, I wonder why the news agencies did not use it

as for others… Check Your Insurance coverage… I have mine reviewed annually…this last one was shocking as the value of the house went up 35% … for full replacement it has to be insured for at least 80% of it value
