Finding a broodmare

So how do you go about finding a great broodmare?

I’m looking for something (casually) special - and don’t require it to be riding sound. Have done some online searches but haven’t found anything promising so far.

Where have you found your quality broodmares? My budget is going to keep me in the breeding sound only market, which limits the options considerably.

Thanks!

Are you looking to start a breeding program or for that one special foal? If it’s the latter, maybe look at custom foal options

I actually currently have a mare bred for a special foal for myself (but mare is not quite right for want I want to produce for others). I am looking to start a small breeding program - so looking to a long term lease or preferably, purchase of a mare.

I started a small breeding program 6 years ago and am just now seeing the development and abilities as my 4 and 5 year olds enter the show ring. That being said - what I have seen is that the mare is so important that I would stretch my budget to get the best mare possible. It will gain you rewards (in terms of quality and thus income) in the long run. I would look for markets where it is expensive to keep horses (think So. Cal) and maybe find a show mare that needs to be retired. Then, you would have the performance record of the mare as well. Alternately I would look at a proven broodmare so you know what they add to the mix.

what discipline?

Seconding contacting Mo Swanson at Rolling Stone Farm. I know she is trimming her breeding program down a lot and has some great deals on very nice mares.

Otherwise, patience. I looked for two years before I found the right mare for me… and then I had to beg, borrow, and steal to make it happen because she was well out of my original price range! Worth it, though!
