I have recently moved back to Virginia. I have been through two farriers and neither seems to know what they are doing. I have four horses. All have good feet. They are all barefoot, except for my mare, who has a club foot, and needs front shoes. With this new farrier, she is not tracking straight. He blames it on a possible neurological problem. Does anyone know a good farrier? I am approx. 10 miles south of Culpeper. Thank you for any information you can provide.
I hate to suggest it, but I found a great one in my state by using newhorse.com. It is at least a way to see their websites and you know they are in your area.
I looked using the town you gave and there were several. Worth a look.
Thank you for that information!
If anyone else has any other suggestions, especially with experience, I would appreciate it!
I’m not too far from you, and can tell you a few to stay away from if you want to PM me!
I’m still struggling to find a reliable and competent farrier for my guy (sigh) where we are outside of Charlottesville.
Me too, PaintedTrails … recently moved to Charlottesville and need someone with experience in founder rehab
I would have to say John Kern @Forthehorses . He has been working with a previous barn buddy and her mare (who has foundered before and had a flare up this year). I’m not sure he’d come to me for one horse but I really should contact him myself!
Aside from good barefoot balance trim I’m eventually seeking to use composite shoes and that seems a more difficult thing to find someone who has experience!
wow, i’m shocked in such “horsey” areas that it is hard to find a farrier. Call me grateful for mine.
I am still waiting for Dave Giza to contact me, after a prompt reply to my message via FB. That was Oct 11th. He said he would call me later that am, but no call. Sent another message and nothing. Then I received a message from Marc Condrey, saying he would be interested in helping. Does anyone know anything about these two farriers? Over the years, I have enough experience from farriers who claim they know all about everything and know nothing. It pains me terribly. Any my poor horses have to endure their inexperience/lack of knowledge. I guess there is some good coming from the fact I cannot ride now. Please, anyone, help. “paintedtrails” would be happy to know who to stay away from. Already know of two.
I can’t give you any recommendations, as I am not local to you. However, about the best way to find out whose skills you like and whose you do NOT like is to look at other horses that a farrier has worked on in your area. Do not use your own horses as guinea pigs. When you see some nicely trimmed and/or shod feet on a local horse, find out the farrier’s name who did the job. That’s the person you want to try as a farrier for your own horses.
I’m sending you a message!
