Finding A XC Boot To Protect The Extensor Tendon

I am in search of XC boots with a hard shell to protect the extensor tendons. Does such a thing exist?

I have a “bubble wrap” horse who has whacked his extensor tendon XC schooling before, despite wearing boots, and it swelled significantly. The boots I used at the time were made of a foam shell all around, which provided some shock absorption, but I’m thinking maybe there’s something else I can consider.
While I appreciate the training issues that need to be addressed, I am wondering if there is anything else that I can do from a management perspective to hopefully help keep the injury from reoccurring.

I think a lot of the xc specific boots have strike plates on both.

It would help to know what boot he was in and what boots you have looked at. There are so many boots available.

You could always use hind boots (that have cannon guards) on the front legs. Of course you wouldn’t have flexor tendon guards in that case, and you may need to size down depending how tall he is.

From a practical perspective though… I wouldn’t worry too much. I’ve had two horses with extensor tendon injuries-- one of them with quite a large, unsightly hematoma and tendon sheath swelling from hitting a jump. However it’s usually not an unsoundness, and after a couple months the blemish went away on its own. From then on, I used boots on him in front; woof boots when jumping at home, and Nunn Finer Style boots when XC. Never an issue after that.

I had him in Majyk Equipe boots which I love but i guess are not the right choice for him.

Thank you so much for the input! I’ve never considered trying hind boots on the front legs.

It’s very helpful to hear about your experience with your horses. Thank you!

I’ll look into these, thank you

Also, Premier boots.

Yes, some designs have a strike plate on the hind boot, but make sure the action/ design of boot will function on the front leg. I know of one boot brand in particular where the hind pair has a strike plate, but would not work on the front legs. That brand is the New Equine xc boots.

The Ecogold cross country boots do not have strike plates on front or back boots.

The Professional choice xc boots look similar to the Majyk ones

Dalmar boots used to be more popular than they are now, but they do have a strike plate on the front. I used them for years at the lower levels and liked the fit/protection.
