Finding lost shoe, success!

Tried a new approach to finding lost shoes, brought out my metal detector I purchased to look for nails around my new barn. It’s not really helped for nails, but I found today’s lost shoe in 6 inches of grass, I also found a bar shoe from my dearly departed old man that had been out there for at least a decade!

Back in the day when my mare was young and prone to taking off her shoes, since I didn’t have a metal detector, I learned to look for the deepest hoof prints in the paddock, since the shoe was usually buried 4 inches down. Then I found a farrier that really knew how to set a shoe! Not saying your farrier doesn’t!

Glad you found an easy way to do it.

My horse rarely looses shoes except aluminum which always falls off. Don’t have any idea why. A few years ago he lost one ion a muddy turnout. I looked for quite a while and gave up. There was enough mud to cover it up. I headed for the gate and about 5 feet away my foot hit something hard. It was the shoe, of course…

I learned several years ago that when you are looking for things you will often find them in your peripheral vision. He lost a shoe Memorial Day weekend when the bagpiper started playing in the historic cemetery next to his turnout. He panicked and bent the top of a gate. He lost a shoe. Had a minor cut. I did a pattern weaving around the turnout and found it sticking out of a hoofprint off to the side
