Finger Lakes

Watching the news and weather reports on the “lake effect” storms in the Buffalo, NY area gave me pause to thank my lucky stars that I’m not a horseman there.

Finger Lakes is a very active track. I’ve traveled there on a number of occasions. As I recall there are a great many outlying equestrian facilities for varied discipines in that area also. It is tough enough just to maintain quality care during a short term weather emergency in the northern states, but this situation must be overwhelming for the horsemen and women in the Finger Lakes area. Here in central VA, a heavy snowstorm is a headache, but I would compare this situation in the Lake Erie area as a “coma.”

It is reported that the Buffalo Bills Pro football team was planning on moving it scheduled games to Ontario until the emergency situation is corrected and the roads cleared. Now that’s a switch. Who in their right mind moves north during a severe winter?

We all probably need to say a prayer for all thoses residing near Finger Lakes.

The Bills game was moved to Detroit on Monday night. They haven’t been able to practice at all due to the travel restrictions. Good thing they are playing the Jets!

LOL. Two NY teams playing in Detroit. Who would have guessed? Well, if my geography is right isn’t Detroit slightly more north?

The worst of this didn’t get as far east as Finger Lakes, so while they have the cold, there isn’t a huge amount of snow.

Also, Detroit is on the wrong side of the lake for the lake effect snow, so same thing - cold, but not as much snow.

The weather channel is reporting that by tuesday or wednesday of next week the same area is in for it again. Lord help everyone there. Glad to hear that Finger Lakes got a reprieve of sorts. I’ve noted that their card was cancelled yesterday. I traveled up there some years ago to pick up a mare and took sometime to sight see. The lakes region is quite beautiful. Can’t say the same for the 95 or 81 corridors. I see that NY is advertising “no taxes for start-up businesses.” Sounds intriguing. If I were going to start up a business, I start a porta-john business. From my experience on the road NY could use about 500K more of them to support the traffic. My ads would encourage using ours by saying - “we empty and clean daily, promise.” LOL. And this from someone who was born on Staten Island and escaped south pre-kindergarten.

Only by a matter of a few miles, really. Detroit is in the southeast corner of Michigan and on the wrong side of the state to get the worst of lake effect. Over here on the eastern side of Lake Michigan we get more dumped on us. We only got about a foot in the last two days. It’ll be in the forties or higher this weekend.

Well, I am relieved that Detroit is sheltered from the lake effect snows. Pardon the joke, but I think we’d all agree their city budget couldn’t handle the snow removal costs. If Detroit were to get hit with likes of what hit western NY, it would be Spring before we see life in the Motor City. How would it handle all the GM recalls if no one could get to work?

As an aside, with all the GM recalls I feel left out. I’ve got a 2004 Silervado and it doesn’t show up on any recalls. I’m aghast.

Go Jets.

Sorry to BUMP this old thread, but didn’t want to make a new one just for a quick question… does anyone know what happened to Jon “Pan Man” Bridgman on FL’s handicapping show? He and Dave Mattice have hosted the show for years, but for the last couple weeks Mattice has been doing it alone. I haven’t been able to watch enough to hear an explanation. I know the Pan Man is also a race camera operator (thus the nickname) at the track, in addition to the show… thanks!
