Now I’m sure this could be turned into something else if someone had a mind towards it, but my impression of that is it shows the competitive nature of the Thoroughbred. I never had a savager but I did have a mare who would get really angry if she lost close races. She didn’t have the most talent in the world but she loved to win. If she lost by a country mile, she was subdued after the race. If she lost a close one, she would stomp and snort and be mad at the world.

I remember when Cigar lost the Pacific Classic to Dare and Go. Bill Mott said Cigar knew he’d lost and was really dejected afterwards, dragging around with his head down. Cigar loved peppermints and the first time Mott ever saw the horse decline a mint was after his defeat.
