First Dog Show

I went to my first dog show this weekend. It was a UKC show because our dog is an Estrela Mountain Dog (a Portuguese livestock guarding breed), which is a UKC recognized breed but not AKC recognized.

It was run over 3 days with 2 shows (different judges) running concurrently each day. She was the only Estrela Mountain Dog there (we did a lot of explaining what she was), so she got a meaningless “Best of Breed” in each show. But in two of the shows she got 4th in “Group” (out of 7 or 8 breeds in the “Guardian” group). She behaved and we we learned a lot.

In dogs, 4th is a YELLOW ribbon (3rd is green).

Top three needs to be primary colors, just sayin’… I mean they are PRIMARY lol

Congratulations!!

I think ribbons for UKC must be different than AKC, where group ribbons are blue for 1st, red - 2nd, yellow - 3rd and then white - 4th. Non-regular classes are all over the place though…pastel colors…very confusing!

I’ve never shown in UKC; there really aren’t any UKC shows near me and not really worth traveling to since there are so many AKC shows in my area. There are some different rules; I think it’s possible for a UKC dog to finish a championship even if they never show against another dog in their own breed. That can’t happen in AKC although I think there are some thoughts about changing that or making it a little easier for rare breeds to finish.

Some of the Best of Breed ribbons were light blue, others orange and brown.

Congrats! Fourth is yellow in Canada too, but white is 3rd here.

There are pictures from the show, but they are on my husband’s smartphone, or on the camera, neither of which I can access from my laptop. But here is a picture of Lady earlier this year.

We saw breeds I have never even heard of: Carolina Dog, American Leopard Hound, Multi-Colored Poodle, Small Munsterlnder. And breeds I knew about but had not seen in person: American Pit Bull Terrier, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever.

A wide variety of people. The woman in a Mennonite-style dress (she had a jack Russell, and a bloodhound, and was running a booth with dog-related art and brick-a-brack), with a bonnet; the young man with a mullet/pony tail; the woman with green hair; the man with his arms covered in tattoos.

On Friday afternoon (after we had left for the day) a tree fell down just outside, and took out the power poke, and the power. It also blocked the road, and we had to take a long detour on Saturday morning. Luckily the building had skylights, because we didn’t get power back until late Saturday.
