First hunt in CO next weekend!

I decided to take advantage of the offer to car hilltop for my first meeting with the Araphoe Hunt, but I am already looking forward to bringing the TBs! What a perfect blend of all the fun in horses!!! Traditions, excitement (at whatever level you desire), social time, horses and hounds (from someone that owns several retired sport dogs)…why haven’t I looked in to hunting before now?

I have also contacted another group that is a little closer to me and I’ll be speaking with them tonight. Such a friendly and welcoming group of people! I kinda feel like I stumbled across the best kept horse secret in the world.

Have fun! Wish I could have gone, but make sure you give us all a run down of your day!!

I will be sure to update you guys on the day!

If you all ever cartop with Fort Carson let me know. I have a dear daughter who’s husband is at Fort Carson so she has gate passes and she knows what parts of the base are off limits so she’ll keep you safe. She hunted with me a few years back and enjoyed it a lot. She is horseless right now but would enjoy following a hunt and taking photos.

SLW, I actually work on Fort Carson and I retired from the Army there.
The Carson Hunt is the other group I am talking to in my area. Have your daughter contact me. I have three horses so perhaps we could get together for some riding…if she enjoys the OTTBs mindset. One of mine is a very mellow boy and quite nice for beginners or re-riders.

Fort Carson is a breath taking base, lucky you. Check your PM’s.

I’ve had fun at both Arapahoe and Fort Carson, but for car following, Arapahoe is great. I’m not sure that’s even possible at Ft. Carson but do borrow a horse and hunt there if possible!

I have talked with Betty from Fort Carson Hounds and I will be getting together with her in the near future to see how things work. Having TBs and a love for all things canine we were able to talk forever, until my cell phone died, about so many things. I am really looking forward to this new adventure. I have already told the horses that they “WILL” enjoy this - haha

You go girl!!! I hope to be not far behind you.

Rustbreeches, maybe we can car-top at Arapahoe one of these days? I couldn’t make the one that lv4running is attending but I am free come March. Anyone else want to come??? PM me!

You will have a blast. You are so right, the people are amazing.

I used to hunt with them fairly often and have just moved back to the area and hope to get back into the fold.

Have a blast!

My DS and I met with Araphoe Hunt Club yesterday. While we didn’t get to see the entire hunt because the snow melt was making the roads a bit tough for vehicles, we were able to see enough to know that we want to go back soon! DS actually rides western but after yesterday he is wanting to learn more about english and then go hunting!!! I have introduced him to dressage, stadium jumping, eventing, and pleasure riding but he’s never found something in english riding that interested him. Hunting motivated him though. He really enjoyed learning all the traditions, learning about the hounds, and when they started riding he was pretty excited about it all. I am pretty excited that we may finally have a horse activity we can share besides basic trail riding. He has the best OTTB anyone could ask for, a horse that takes great care of his rider, so I think they will do well together even with the excitement.

Everyone at Araphoe was so friendly and welcoming. They have a member that is 86 years old and she rides a horse that is 23 years old. She told me that she feels there should be a “Century Award” for horse and rider. I agree! Gosh, I hope I am that active when I am that age, and I hope my horses are as well. I feel confident that my silly OTTBs will be okay with their level of training and I am sure they will enjoy this. The hunt area is quite nice and they have offered to provide a “babysitter” for us for the first few hunts. I am so excited about going back soon. I still can’t believe I haven’t tried this before.

So glad you had fun!! That would be great of your DH wants to do it with you!

DS is very motivated to learn and to hunt. BF is a hard core western rider but he expresses interest in fox hunting. I think if I have a saddle that fits him on the quiet horse he’d have a great day and want more, more, more!

For those that have family members in other disciplines wanting to convert over to hunting…how long does it take?

Oops, sorry for marrying you off, and accusing DS of being DH. I’m tired and full of pancakes!. What size saddle does he need?

Read this weeks COTH magazine where one of our “mature” member is highlighted. She turns 82 in March, her hilltop sidekick turns 82 this Saturday. And it’s kind of no surprise but I talked to her Saturday and she is two weeks ahead of her Doctors schedule to return to riding after suffering a fracture to a leg when a horse kicked her 6 weeks ago.

Glad your day following Apraphoe was fun!!!

No worries about the DS/DH I knew what you meant when I read it’.
DS will need a 19-20" english saddle. He’s 6’2" with long legs. He rides in an 18" western. We tried an 18" english with forward flaps but his knee hangs at the very edge of the flap…to small. I’ve been surfing Ebay to see what they have in that size. I looked at the local used tack shops but 18.5"" was the biggest saddle they had. I don’t want to spend a ton in case he changes his mind, but I want quality for him and the horse. I guess that is everyone’s criteria for a saddle isn’t it…quality and inexpensive. haha

lv4running, you can almost always find a 19" Stubben for sale on eBay. There are several there now, mostly Siegfrieds and a Siegfried CS.
My barn owner has an old Stubben Siegfried that’s a 20. It’s truly in used condition, but if it’s something you’d like to try, PM me and I’ll see if she still has it.

I should have mentioned that I need a 4" gullet as well. Many of the ones on Ebay are 5-5.5" gullets. I’m watching Ebay though and I hope to find something soon.

Maybe this one would work? (not my listing, I’m just an eBay addict)

It’s a medium tree, and I’ve had great luck with Crosbys fitting lots of different horses well. Everyone measures gullet width a little differently, but there are good pictures here that could help you decide.
