A Kentucky Derby of a different type will be run on the first Saturday in May…
“The Kentucky Derby: Triple Crown Showdown…
The virtual race, created by Inspired Entertainment, will feature the 13 Triple Crown winners…”
Interesting…and ripe for controversy. If Secretariat does not win I expect all hell to break loose.

Oaklawn is running the rescheduled Ark Derby too if you are thirsting for live TV racing. Minus spectators but with all the big gun colts. It might split into two divisions as they only have a 14 slot gate. If no split, they’ll have to qualify in just like the Ky Derby but there will be a 1st Saturday in May for those who spent the last 6 minths training and conditioning for it. Think theres a filly race too. They are there too.
Sounds like fun. Thanks for posting about it, @mommy peanut .
I wonder if the handicapper will allow for the winners who started from behind a barrier before the advent of starting gates. And, since it says “greatest of all time,” I wonder if they will include Man o’ War!
Did Man O War win the Triple Crown? Don’t think he’s “eligible”. I pick Secretariat based on his times. No idea how they will handicap for the barrier instead of gate, less accurate timing, much laxer oversight of race conduct or various methods of enhancing performance. Not sure theres anyway to level the playing field completely.
But it will be fun to watch and sure there will be a way to wager on it.
Man o’ War is not a Triple Crown winner, so he will not be involved.
He didn’t run in the KD.
Samuel Riddle, Man o’ War’s owner did not believe in racing at 10f that early in a young horse’s career.
He did run in the Preakness and Belmont Stakes (by 20 lengths) to finish his race career 9 wins from 10 starts loosing only once to finish second to, fittingly named, Upset in a race at Saratoga helping to add to the Graveyard of Champions name often applied to Saratoga.
Man o’ War was retired at the end of his 3 year old year because the weights he would have been assigned in handicap races for older horses would have been too high.
Yep. I’m well aware of all things Man o’ War
Wasn’t directed at you… sometimes I add/clarify for all the readers who either don’t post but read only or do post but don’t ‘get it’
It’s all good
It’ll be interesting to see who their computer algorithm comes up with as the winner & runner ups.
An alternative to the virtual KY Derby is the Kentucky Turtle Derby, billed as “the slowest eight minutes in sport”.
Another unapproved post for me. I guess no links are allowed anymore?
LaurieB, I just posted 2 links in a different topic and no problem with unapproved.
Wonder what is different between the link you posted and what I posted…?
Now my unapproved post has appeared. I don’t know what was wrong with my link, but I guess it’s okay now.
I think it would be interesting to learn more about what makes a link/post unapproved vs approved. Occasionally I get an unapproved as well but most approved… curiosity for sure!
I had just shared this on my blog & am personally looking forward to the showdown between Seattle Slow & Sir Hides A Bunch. I gave extra points for the Triple Crown announcer & other folks who are good enough sports to participate!
Huh, I have never had an “unapproved” post until I quoted yours, LaurieB – maybe the algorithm is just “COTH does not approve of Laurie?”
It’s possible.
(sorry your post didn’t work.)
