First Time Backed and Pony was a Superstar!

So excited to finally be able to back a pony we got last November. He is a 14.2h 4 year old BRP but was a stallion and living in a paddock by himself for his first 3.5 years of life. He was gelded in September 2023, we picked him up in November and I was too busy with 2 other ponies I was working/showing so he was on the backburner at first. Plus he needed a lot of work and handling first - he lead, but barley.

He had almost never been in a stall, never really ever seen things as he was a pasture pet his whole 3.5 years of life so it was a bit of an undertaking. But he was always the sweetest pony, wanted to learn (even though he was terrified of EVERYTHING, and I mean everything), so we just took it slow and let him figure things out.

I have taken him to a few line shows so he can learn to load, stand on the trailer by himself, get bathed (he literally shook for the first few months if I hosed him off or bathed him. We are finally not shaking and standing still and looking like he kind of enjoys it), stand to get braided etc. All the fun stuff!

I had my husband on the end of a lunge line while I got on him and we took a few steps and he was perfect. Walked around the outdoor ring a few times on the lunge and quit. Then the next day (yesterday) I had my husband lunge me and we did some walk and about 5 mins of trot and again, he was perfect. He is on the lazy side and just wanted to walk, so we took lots of breaks (and pats and told how good he was) and he caught on fast. His voice commands are great and he really listens and even started to put leg, voice and going forward very quickly.

I then had my husband let me go so I can walk around on my own to practice some steering and some halts. Ended after a few minutes, lots of pats and praise and told him how good he was.

I have started about 8 ponies of this breeding - all the same sire (but all the others were welsh x BRP, so this is my first full BRP) and they have all been quite easy, so I’m very lucky and over the years, really understand what they like/don’t like. I have started a few pure welsh and some sport horses and they are all so different (of course). I have one more warmblood x BRP to start later this year or maybe next year (he is 2 now, but seems immature, so I just might wait until next year).

Our plan is to keep this boy and maybe break him to drive if he has the mind and attitude for it. He could be a match to our driving pony right now, but our current guy is already 15 years old, so we shall see. I will be boarding him out with an indoor all winter so I can work with him and get more of a feel on what to do with him. I just want him to learn some basics of steering before I move him since there will be other boarders there ha ha! I will start him as a hunter (my preferred sport after driving) and then bring him home in the spring and start some line driving.

@JBCool - I think he’s stunning as well! But my in laws bred him and they have been breeding for 50 years and know pony bloodlines like the back of their hand. His parents were both imported from the UK and have great bloodlines. I was super lucky to get him, even if he was a blank slate and acted like a weanling in a 3 year olds body. But he has it all there, just needed some confidence and trust.

@beowulf - Thank you! My husband surprised me by saying how proud I should be of starting this guy. He was so relaxed and ho hum throughout the whole process. He never says anything like that to me after starting any pony (and there has been many!) but he knows how far this boy has come. When I got on him the first time, my hubby told me to have an exit plan as he thought he was for sure going to buck me off. I like keeping my stirrups but he thought I shouldn’t use them in case I needed to bail. I find I can stay on better if I have them ha ha (I’m not getting any younger as I’m in my mid 40’s and don’t need any more crashes). I told him to have trust in us and just take us forward one step and stop so he can process. All was good so pats and we continued on. No issues so far, just a happy, willing partner who seems to be enjoying the process so far!

I will for sure keep people updated and plan to just do some more easy stuff for the next bit. I am taking him my brother in laws farm next weekend where he can learn to sleep over somewhere different and experience riding/working in an indoor. There is also one more line show I can take him to that’s in the area if the weather still cooperates. This will be perfect for him so he can learn to “live” at different places since he will be going to an indoor boarding barn for the winter. It would be great for him and for me to see how he acts!

Nothing spectacular and lots to work on, but this was our second time trotting under saddle and the first time off the lunge line trotting. I just wanted to post it so I can come back in a year to compare it .

He’s not a fan of rein contact (totally normal) but tried really hard. I was very happy with him and quit after 5 mins.

I gave him a day off then rode one day on the weekend. His 3rd time under saddle and I decided to use the whole ring this time. He was a superstar!

My gosh, what a gorgeous guy! Adding him to my list of COTH ponies I can’t wait to watch grow up and see where they are in six months or a year.

It’s as I feared, his progress is going terribly. You’ll have to send him to me.

(GREAT job!! Love the newest video, he looks more confident already.)

He’s learning to be a big boy and has taken it all in stride. I thought he really would have looked and spooked at everything in the corners but he handled it all like a pro. 5th time under saddle and 1st time in an indoor. His sleep over is going really well and he’s acting better than I ever would have thought. Settled into stall life as he hasn’t been in a stall all summer. Individual turnout and all has gone perfectly as well. A very nice surprise!
