My family adopted an 8 year old Aussie mix about a month ago. He is the best dog in the entire world and I could not love him more. The problem is, the poor guy has some pretty bad skin issues. When we adopted him, he was getting weekly medicated baths with Phytovet because he had pretty gross and gunky skin. That has now cleared up, but he is still pretty itchy, and overall has a very poor coat quality (he has pretty bad dandruff on his poor little butt).
Additionally, he had some fatty masses removed right before we adopted him, so his butt is shaved, and the hair is growing back very slowly. His nails grow very, very slowly as well.
He currently gets 8 mg of Apoquel a day to help with the itching, one Zyrtec (I suspect that part of the itchiness is also due to seasonal allergies, so added Zyrtec at vet’s recommendation) and now I would like to start him on a fish oil supplement.
I’m going to email my vet about the dosing on fish oil, but I found a chart online (http://csu-cvmbs.colostate.edu/vth/small-animal/sports-medicine-rehabilitation/Pages/fish-oil-dosing-chart.aspx) that seems to suggest he would need 10 capsules per day based on his weight (we have the Kirkland soft gel capsules that are 1000mg fish oil with 250mg EPA/DHA), which seems crazy to me, so I am looking into something like salmon oil or SeaMeal that is a bit…easier… to feed.
All of this to say, if you have any recommendations on fish oil supplements or anything similar to improve skin and coat quality, let me know!
