Fish oil/salmon oil/general coat supplement

My family adopted an 8 year old Aussie mix about a month ago. He is the best dog in the entire world and I could not love him more. The problem is, the poor guy has some pretty bad skin issues. When we adopted him, he was getting weekly medicated baths with Phytovet because he had pretty gross and gunky skin. That has now cleared up, but he is still pretty itchy, and overall has a very poor coat quality (he has pretty bad dandruff on his poor little butt).
Additionally, he had some fatty masses removed right before we adopted him, so his butt is shaved, and the hair is growing back very slowly. His nails grow very, very slowly as well.
He currently gets 8 mg of Apoquel a day to help with the itching, one Zyrtec (I suspect that part of the itchiness is also due to seasonal allergies, so added Zyrtec at vet’s recommendation) and now I would like to start him on a fish oil supplement.

I’m going to email my vet about the dosing on fish oil, but I found a chart online (http://csu-cvmbs.colostate.edu/vth/small-animal/sports-medicine-rehabilitation/Pages/fish-oil-dosing-chart.aspx) that seems to suggest he would need 10 capsules per day based on his weight (we have the Kirkland soft gel capsules that are 1000mg fish oil with 250mg EPA/DHA), which seems crazy to me, so I am looking into something like salmon oil or SeaMeal that is a bit…easier… to feed.

All of this to say, if you have any recommendations on fish oil supplements or anything similar to improve skin and coat quality, let me know!

Is the itching related to insects (mite?) or feed? I’d choose a liquid product instead of capsules.

Compare to this product. This is what my holistic vet recommends:

Nordic Naturals Pet Omega 3

He had fleas when the rescue that we got him from acquired him, but they have since cleared up - he definitely doesn’t have fleas/mites anymore. I don’t think he has any food allergies either because he has super healthy, normal stool and he’s not struggling with ear infections, hives, etc - just itchy skin.

I agree that a liquid product will be easier to feed than capsules. SeaMeal is a powder so I thought that would be pretty painless as well (he is the least picky dog I’ve ever met and will snorf up anything in his path lol)!

Biotin. Meanwhile if you’re still giving him baths use a conditioner or creme rinse. If not get some coconut oil, warm it in your hands and rub it all over him getting down to his skin.

ETA: With his recent problems it might not hurt to get him a multi vitamin with biotin and lysine to help boost his immune system as well as his overall health

agree on giving a general multi-vitamin.

I feed my shepherd canned salmon once a week or so and she loves any canned oily fish.

Also my past shepherd had poor nutrition when I rescued her from a shelter and I gave her ground flax just like for the horses.

Also a few raw eggs per week is great for the coat (biotin).

My currrent shelter shepherd now has a great coat but I feed her human grade meat, all varieties, from the supermarket.

Yes, she’s spoiled but I don’t have faith in most commercial foods.

What does he eat?

I will definitely look into adding biotin to his supps!
