Fit of Trauma Void Lynx?

Hey COTH, Call me a new believer in MIPS tech after reading the Devon post, and I got a new TV Lynx to replace my 6-year-old CO Ayr8. I want to love it, but I can’t figure out the fit. I’m a 6 7/8, but the new Ayrbrush in the same size was comically too small and wouldn’t go on my head. I have the medium Lynx which I think does fit, but the dial is all the way expanded, even though it is supposed to fit up to 7 1/4. Do we expect the pads in the helmets to smush down a little so a super snug fit is what we are going for, so I shouldn’t worry about committing to this helmet?

Nowhere really convenient to me to go try things on, and I got this from Dover for Helmet Day, so I’m trying to keep the discount without a bunch of shipping back and forth. (Dover is also being incredibly slow to refund the Ayrbrush I returned the day after I received it, going on 3 weeks now, but that’s a separate issue).

Also - the Lynx feels heavier, just wearing it around be house. Those of you that have one - is this something you stop noticing once you ride in it?

I’m not sure about the fit since I went from Tipperary to TV, but as far as the heaviness goes, I did notice that it felt heavier when I first put it on. But once I got on my horse I completely stopped noticing. I actually really love riding in it. I was worried about it feeling hot but it really doesn’t.

I went from a Uvex to the Lynx and had to go with the large (I’m usually a 59 or 7-1/4). I wish I had worn it around the house more before riding in it as I hate it but can’t return. It is heavier and something about the fit gave me the worst headaches every time I rode in it. I like the idea of the new technology, but the fit was not for me. I’m back riding in my Uvex and the Lynx is sitting on a shelf – I’ll pull it out when the weather is cooler and see if I like it any better but for now, I just can’t force myself to wear it, I disliked it so much.

@horsepoor don’t keep a helmet you don’t love. Safety is paramount and your fit and comfort is a very big key. There are other MIPS helmets out there and we’ve been told that both Tipperary (Feb 2020) and OneK (mid 2020) will be introducing a MIPS helmet as well.

Return the Lynx while you can and take your time finding a comfortable fitting MIPS helmet when you love one.

I went from a cheapie Troxel to a TV EQ3. I don’t notice the weight difference when I’m riding. I ordered both the TV and the Lynx when I was helmet shopping. I loved the deeper fit of the Lynx, but it was too round for my head. There were big gaps between the helmet and the sides of my head.

Just a quick update. Ovation has replied to their inquiry email. They too are planning a MIPS helmet in the future, but they didn’t supply a time line.

I had the medium Lynx (need to send it back for warranty but will be getting another:() I’m a 6 5/8 and could arguably go down to the small but not sure if it would fit if I put my hair up. My AYR8 is a slightly snugger fit but not much.

Honestly, I feel like my Lynx is lighter than my CO GR8 was, but everyone is different.

I wear a large TV Lynx, and typically dial it to about 80% of maximum tightness. I do wear my hair up, but have found two things:

First, you’re best off using a hairnet without a large knot—I could tolerate these in other helmets, but not in the TV.
Second, if you wear your hair up, be sure that the hair tie sits directly under the harness (not inside the harness or helmet) or the dial won’t tighten correctly/won’t be comfortable.

Play around with the fit. At the end of the day, it may not be the helmet for you.

Thanks for the responses, all. I wear my hair in a ponytail at the base of my skull, so no hair interfering with fit. I’d heard the Lynx was closest to the head-shape fit of the COs; I’ve found One K’s and GPAs gave me instant headaches. I think it does fit properly, it feels even all the way around, and after a good half hour wearing it in the house I didn’t have a headache. It’s just REALLY snug. Now that I go put my old CO back on to ride, I find it slides around on my head, and I wouldn’t buy a helmet that fits like that (this helmet def use to fit me like a glove), so I imagine the padding does mush down a bit in the beginning and over time compacts even more.

I was just curious what others’ experiences have been, to see if I really am just imagining the weight or the snugness because I’m thinking too hard about it - probably the case!

So my old CO did this. And I went to the company. They had some of their more experienced fitters measure me (At Rolex when the big wigs were there and so were the ‘good’ measuring people.) Low and behold they said I had been wearing the wrong size. That I was actually a 7, not a 7 1/8. So with a 7 1/8 the life cycle was… buy and it fit perfectly…slowly it stretches out. I had to start putting my ponytail into the helmet to make it fit and eventually it would get too loose to wear, even in the winter with ear warmers.

When I switched to the ‘correct’ size 7 the life cycle was… Cause headaches for entire life. Worse in first 6 months could only wear helmet for 30-40 mins, stretch out slowly so you can wear for an hour before helmet becomes intolerable, then get too loose.

I had the JR8’s, Gr8, AyrBrush and the one CO that does actually fit and didn’t hurt that long was the APM II. (Skull cap)

I have never had a headache with my Trauma Void’s.

I am wholly against putting any hair in the helmet because during an accident they have proven it can prevent the helmet from protecting you as best as possible.

I find my Lynx to fit and feel very similar to my OneK actually. It’s not heavy feeling, though the fit is more snug all around my head-- because it actually fits! The fitter I used had me try several brands: Samshield (ugh…hated them!), CO-- they look like a bowl on my head and don’t fit my weird, small head, OneK- even the small was too big on parts of my head, it wiggled. GPAs just squeeze and give me headaches. The Lynx fit like a glove, looks smart, and no headaches!

Everyone’s head is different, so trying multiple helmets and understanding how they are actually supposed to fit is critical. Hopefully, all the popular helmet companies will have MIPs versions out soon so more head shapes will be accomodated.

Xctrygirl-- thank you so much for your advocacy on this issue. Our heads are so important. I am a huge believer in always wearing a helmet and as a teacher of MS kids, I push for them for all my kids in their sporting activities (bikes, skateboards, baseball, skiing, etc.!)

I replaced my Samshield with a Lynx this summer after a fall onto my back that resulted in a majorly bruised pelvis and smacking the back of my head against the ground. To the credit of my Samshield, if I got a concussion, it was the most minor concussion of all time. That Samshield helmet fit my head incredibly well though.

I do love my new Lynx though I do find it a bit heavier and not as low profile. Which I did like about my Samshield as I have an enormous head and feel that helmets make me look like the mushroom character in Super Mario Bros. The dial adjustment took a bit of getting used to. The first couple rides I cranked it up way too tight, gave myself a major headache and left the impression of the liner on my forehead. I have it appropriately adjusted now and find it very comfy. It is also a very stylish looking helmet and literally half the price of the last one. Although I hope not to test out the MIPS technology in the near future, I am glad it’s there!

If you like the fit of the Charles Owen helmets, why not try their MIPS helmet? I recently replaced my old AYR8 that had become loose after 7 years (I know, too long) with the CO MyPS and I find it very comfortable. I often forget I’m wearing it after a ride. I really dislike any of the dial-fit helmets and they never seem to be as comfortable as the specifically sized ones.
