Flaky skin at elbows

Suddenly 2 of my horses have those tiny flakes at just one of their elbows.
I started peeling them off, but the more I peel the more flakes we get and the rougher the skin becomes.

Would you be thinking scratches in that case? No other skin issues anywhere else.

I bleached all brushes to be sure. Using Equiderma shampoo but no ointments just yet.

My chestnut mare gets flaky skin behind one elbow too. Seems to happen when the weather is really hot and I fly spray her before putting on her girth. I just put Equiderma lotion on the flaky skin and it seems to go away on its own.

Probably from laying down - their feet hit that area at times. My mare is the same way - i just put some gall salve or corona ointment on the area to keep it soft.

Okay thanks, yes the weather in NJ has been brutal here the last couple of weeks, especially this weekend was hot & humid, and it does seem to coincide.
I’ll continue the Equiderma and see if it goes away.

Try head and shoulders shampoo and regular use of a curry comb. I also tend to use tea tree oil on most skin scurf. If any of it is raw looking then maybe Equiderma lotion (not shampoo).

My gelding gets this from time to time. I find the Equiderma lotion gets rid of it after just one application.

I just checked the ingredients of the Equiderma lotion vs shampoo, different indeed. I’ll pick up the lotion tomorrow.
Thanks

I used to use MicroTek on that but it ended up scalding my horse’s skin last year. What has worked but needs to be done consistently (a few times a week) is sponging with diluted vinegar after a bath/rinse. I find this helps all the scurf on the elbows and face.

My gelding has this and I use the Zephyrs Garden and when I bathe him I started using Head and shoulders it seems to calm everything down. I have been using Zephyrs for 3 years now and love the tea tree spray or salve for anything that shows up on my guy rain rot, scratches, whatever else.

I love this product - Vet Set Cocoa Butter

My 30 year old gelding gets the same kind of flaky skin near his elbows. I used Hay Where’s That Blue Stuff once so far this summer and it was gone the next day. https://www.bigdweb.com/product/code/3995.do?gclid=CjwKCAjwg-DpBRBbEiwAEV1_-Bki-YwCrZY8OulZIdDYIIAVGOMgi_Ja7E0X56ZwVy0mv-LYqDFzBBoClZ8QAvD_BwE

Drying their elbows after a bath helps, with just the sponge or a towel, rather than letting them drip dry. Maybe y’all do - I see a lot of people who don’t and it bugs the crap out of me.
