Flashy Dressage Stallions <16HH

I have a 16.3 TB Maiden Mare in the process of being bred to Parcival (16.3+) and I absolutely LOVE him and know I will LOVE the foal, but at 5’3 tall it’s not realistic. While the Parcival baby will be for sale, I hope to re-breed her next year for a keeper.

What’s out there for flashy, proven Stallions between 15HH - 16HH? I realize it’s a narrow window but would love something to ideally finish under 16.2, the smaller the better… 15.2-16hh would be ideal for me. I’m not even opposed to the ‘right’ pony stallion.

The mare is a typical flat-knee’d TB mover, with a super jump until an injury ended her riding career. She has a great temperament and I would love to produce something uphill with improved elasticity and that same great ammy-friendly temperament.

Must AI as we’re in Northern Canada.

Ridley if you want horse size, SF Spirit if you don’t.

I have one I love by Hilken’s Go For Gold, but I don’t know as much about how he crosses with TBs. mine is from a qh mare.

I don’t have any stallion recs but your title says greater than 16 hands, I think you mean to say less than (<)?

Oh Jeez, woops!!! Lol. Yes, ideally under 16 - 16.1.

Check out Dreamscape Farms in BC. They have a good range of very high quality stallions for all types, are very reasonably priced, and are wonderful to work with.

I am really excited to be breeding for myself this year, and both my mares are going to ponies to bring the size down but keep the movement I want.

My 16h GOV-approved TB mare Lady Ramona xx by Meadow Prayer [Meadowlake] is booked to Golden West (by Golden Dream).

My 15.3h Elite/SPS GOV mare by Licotus is booked to Milky Way (by FS Mr Right).

The mares have a good bit of size in their families, and have thrown size when bred to larger WB stallions, but I’m hoping to get something around 15 hands in both cases, though I’d be happy with a little bigger or a little smaller.

I LOVE SF Spirit but that farm has no stallion handler right now so he is not available. I’m rather bummed. But this link might help - it is a list a breeder in California put together about smaller stallions and pony stallions.http://www.winecountrysportponies.com/stallions

My guy is a connemara but was presented to OLD-NA with excellent scores and a breeding certificate issued. We will also be presenting him to other registries.
He has started showing this year in Dressage and has impressed judges
Just a thought for you. He is 14.2 and allows height to come through.

Golden State, german riding pony. Same farm as Golden West mentioned above. Two very good options

I would wait and see what your mare throws from this first breeding…do you know the hights/sizes of her sire and dam? If they were both under 16hh there’s a good chance that she may not throw huge.

I say ‘good chance’ but with my own experience it didn’t work out that way…lol. My 15.2hh maiden, both her sire and dam were 16hh on a good day, was bred to a 16.3hh sweedish WB and the resulting colt is now 17.1hh. Way too big for me!

Donarweiss is not large himself and tends to throw smaller offspring

Why did I have it in my head he’s no longer available? Hmm maybe I’m thinking of someone else.

Sternlicht is not available and is also a Greengate stallion, but as far as I know Donarweiss is.

Thank you everyone!! I have * loved * Donarweiss since I was in my teens, so that makes me really happy!

Do we know if there is anywhere in Canada to get his semen for ease of shipping?

I like the suggestion of Golden State to produce a great mover in a smaller size. Why not contact some of the German Riding Pony (Weser Ems) breeders out there and ask them? The riding ponies I’ve seen are big warmbloods in little packages. I have a friend with one going I1 and he is very fancy but the right size for a smaller rider. I am sure there are breeders out there doing crosses with warmblood mares and pony stallions. Since the German Riding Ponies were developed for kids before they were big enough to move up to full size horss, many of them also have lovely temperments.

For a small proven dressage stallion I would go with Dauphin. He is in Canada. I wouldn’t call him Flashy but his record of producing Upper level offspring is more important to me than a flashy mover. I think he’s stunning and really stamps his offspring and you will not be able for too much longer to breed to direct Donnerhall sons or daughters their all getting pretty mature.

Hilkens Go For Gold is in Canada (near Ottawa) and ships, as does the cremello GRP Milky Way also near Ottawa. Ashland also has a young two year old I saw a couple of weeks ago who I think will be available next year…a Totilas grandson by Trendsetter. Will be a lovely small dressage horse when he grows up…but both the GRPs are showing dressage in the Ottawa area. Dauphin is lovely too (and available fresh in Canada) but if you want to think outside the box there are a few nice Canadian Arabs (like Empres in Manitoba or some of the blingy Aulrab lines in BC) who could sire fancy dressage horses with the right mare…
