Flax availability?

So far I have lucked out and early this summer I bought two bags which are now running out. I called the feed store and the company they buy from doesn’t have any. When do they harvest flax? Is there a shortage of this year’s crop? Dammit I need that stuff!

I buy Triple crown from tractor supply, they have it, super expensive. But I am a triple Crown Distributor and could not get the product from my channel, but somehow tractor supply was getting it, and selling at my cost.

Is this whole seed or stabilized ground flax? I usually feed whole seed and grind it in a coffee grinder before I feed it. But if all I can get is the more expensive heat stabilized I will use it until I can get the whole seed. If there is an overall flax shortage then I should stock up on several bags when it is available.

here is how to read the Date Code on a bag of Triple Crown. TSC uses it own warehouse system which often cause product to be long dated

Thanks! The local TSC has a bag. I would rather have the cheaper whole flax but I don’t know when it will be available so I will drive down and pick up a bag so I don’t run out.

Interesting. I just bought a bag of whole flax last week and was thrilled that the price was down by almost 50%! It had skyrocketed last year, but now it was back to normal.

Maybe that is good news for me. If the feedstore can source any. I just bought a bag of the $$$ ground flax because I was about to run out. Hopefully I can get some of the lower cost whole flax soon. If they get some in I am going to buy multiple bags. It is cooler and the seed is not ground so it should last for months without going bad.

Where are you located?
I’m in VA and my Southern States has been without whole flax for some time (years now.) Local feed mill had it but went out of business. Finally located it from a feed mill near Staunton.
I also found it when I was in Kentucky at KBC in Lexington.
So, you may want to call local mills.

For the last couple of years, the only place I’ve been able to find whole flax is at Winco (grocery store). Where it used to be $17/25 lbs, and has gone up to $57/25#. This last time I asked again at the feed store and they had it! $81/50 lbs, but I’m not complaining. Other than three years ago it was $35 for that same bag. Hopefully prices will start coming back to normalish.

I am in central Alabama. No feed mills around here anymore. One sort of local feedstore/ag supply place has had whole flax for years. It went from $29 for 50 lbs to $58 last year. Another feed store quit carrying it several years ago. I was always able to get it from the one feed store or they would order it. I think this is the first time their supplier didn’t have any. I don’t know if this is the new normal or if the supplier will get some in soon.

My feed stores always special order it for me.

I was paying $58 for a 50lb bag… but this last one was only $37! That’s around the price it used to be.

really from an economic point it is understandable why little flax is grown in the US. Flax yields per acre are in the 20 bushel range for a good year, a bushel of flax weighs 56 pounds. A bushel of flax is currently bring a whopping $11.20

It is grown in same soils as wheat which yields an average 46.5 bushels per acre The current price of wheat as of October 23, 2023 is $6.8955 per bushel .

hmm didn’t see much flax grown here this year, it’s not a major crop but usually there is some around, will ask my farmer friends if they heard anything about the amount harvested
