Is anyone feeding their horse Flax Oil or Sunflower Oil as a supplement? Where are you purchasing this food grade oil, and how much are you giving them? Or are you supplementing with something else for Omega 3 and 6 ? Thanks in advance. My guy loves this so he is obviously missing this in his diet.
Not a supplement expert by any means but I used to add ground up flax seed to my horses grain. It goes rancid pretty fast so I’d grind it up and keep extra in my freezer. That horse had the most beautiful coat. That was years ago and I think they make a stabilized oil now.
I get flax oil from Santa Cruz animal health.
Horses without enough fresh grass do benefit from adding O3, but horses don’t need extra O6
My guy loves this so he is obviously missing this in his diet.
Love does not equal missing
If you choose flax oil, make sure it’s cold processed, and is stored in an opaque container, out of light. It degrades pretty quickly with air and sun. Whole flax can have benefits, no real need to grind. It’s cheap enough you can feed a bit more to account for unchewed/digested seeds. Or, you can grind it at each meal. Or you can buy pre-ground, stabilized flax
I feed flax and have also used the Triple Crown Rice Bran Oil blend.
I’d not use a sunflower seed oil–totally packed with omega 6. That’s a lot of $$ to spend on something like that…you can get high omega 6 for a lot less $$ with straight up vegetable oil. (Not that it’s a great idea to go out of your way to increase O6…)
 You know that’s not how this works, right? If it were, then my horses are SERIOUSLY LACKING in horse treats in their diet!
Consider camelina oil as it’s now getting easier to acquire in large quantities than flax oil
There is a Canadian company that makes a camelina oil supplement for horses that I know of but I haven’t tried it. It’s been pretty easy for me to find gallons of flax oil, though. I get a 4 pack of Ultra Cruz for a lot less per gallon than Platinum Performance or some others. They also have a flax based oil blend for less, but I haven’t looked closely at it re omega 3:6.
The UltraCruz Flax Oil Blend is Flax and Soybean oil. I personally don’t recommend it much.
I feed mine the UltraCruz Pure Flax Oil or the UltraCruz Equine Weight Gain (Pure Flax & natural vitamin E). I had him on ExcelEQ with no change for months. Not a huge fan.
I’m deficient in Peppermint Twist Vodka…obviously…best rectify
I feed a cup of whole flax added to a mash. You can buy it at a feed store, and I feel that getting the oils from a seed is more in tune with horses natural diet than adding oil. Plus I am not 100% sure how well nutrients survive the oil making process.
Whole flax doesn’t go rancid under normal conditions and tastes good. It has omega 3. One of the few traditional horse foods that does. I pay about $35 for 50 lbs and it lasts forever.
I get livestock grade but really there is nothing different about it. I don’t see any problem feeding livestock on livestock grade whole grains. On the other hand oils could be contaminated or sub par as they are highly processed foods.
My horse’s LOVE peppermints and surely think i don’t give them enough every day… doesn’t mean they are missing it in their diet. Just get flax seeds would really be much easier than oil, you can always grind up a days worth at a time.
I agree it is so much cheaper and easier, and just as beneficial to feed whole flax seed. My horses have been on it for awhile and look wonderful. I think it does wonderful things for their coats and helps keep weight on.
It’s all fat, so…
