Flax prices skyrocket

I think it was @JB that warned about this.

Flax here in Western Canada at our local feerdstore has gone from about $30 last summer to $45 in the fall to over $100 now, for a 40 or 50 lb bag. Yeah we don’t need flax that badly for now.

Wow! I just bought a 50lb bag of whole flax ( in Alabama ) a few weeks ago for $29. This will last me for months. Glad I didn’t wait longer. Hopefully prices will be back down when it is time to buy more.

I used to pay about $40 for a bag, and my most recent purchase cost $55. I’m not familiar with JB’s warning, what is the root cause of the inflated cost? And more importantly, is it permanent or temporary?

yup I just checked here in Fl. it’s $51.95 for 50 lb. or $1.00/lb in smaller bulk.

market report say Covid has caused a price increase because flax is a cheaper source of certain vitamins and the supply chain has been disrupted.
So supply and demand.

That’s really interesting. Is there anything that COVID hasn’t affected? :anguished:

I better go pick up a couple bags. I paid 27.00 for 50 lbs at the feed store last Friday. Everything is going up in my area.

Many areas in North America with high flax production have had major drought issues, which has made for a scarcity, which means more flax seeds are being held back in order to have a crop next year. Obviously shipping issues aren’t helping, but you also can’t ship what doesn’t exist LOL

Triple Crown won’t be making a new batch of their milled flax once the current production runs out - they can’t get enough, and what they can get, they need to for the feeds that have flax.

BOSS has also increased by the same amount. I use BOSS in my goats & cows feed that I mix and have cut back.

I bought a bag of whole flax today at $36 a bag. I bought it last time for $ 29 and was shocked. I had been getting it for several years for a steady $ 20.

Thank goodness a bag lasts me for months. I just feed it to my horses now. I used to mix that in my goats feed too but not when it increased…

Linseed oil is also used in industrial processes that are bidding up flax.

I bought a new bag of whole flax last week and I think it was around $1/lb in my area (around $50 for a 50lb bag). It used to be around $0.60/lb and has been steadily creeping up in price.

I got the last bag of Triple Crown flax from my feed store last week. I was shocked when they told me there would not be any more for the foreseeable future.

Wow. I just finished my Omega 3 & E from SmartPak. Can we assume all of their supplements with flax will increase in price too??

For a change I was going to stop the 3&E and try Source for a while. His Vitamin E test results were too high----and he’s in a dirt pasture on hay 24/7.

I just got a 40lb purina flax bag and IIRC It was $30. There’s no way I would pay $100 for a bag though! That’s crazy!

Are the ground flax supplements skyrocketing as well?

Ground flax starts as whole flax, so yes, if it’s even going to be available.

I had said earlier that TC would not be producing any more of their Naturals Ground Flax when the current production batch ran out, as they can’t get enough, and what they can get they need for their feeds that contain flax. And Snowdenfarm’s experience, above, bears that out

I feed Manna Pro flax from an 8 pound bucket. If I buy a larger amount, it goes rancid, and the bucket lasts about a month. It was $19 per bucket pre-pandemic. The last bucket I bought was $33.

Thanks for the heads up - just ordered two bags of the TC flax. Should hold me for a couple of months at least.

Woo hoo - I just scored two 50 pound bags of whole flax. It was $29 in November and is up to $43 a bag now. I was afraid if I didn’t get both bags I wouldn’t be able to get any for a while. It is lasting me about 3 months per bag so maybe in 6 months the new crop will be about ready to harvest. The feed store said they were having a hard time getting it.
