I’ve only heard great things about Omega Horseshine from a couple people that I know that use it. SoI was going to use it, but it has Tryptophan listed as an ingredient. Is that the same as L-Tryptophan (which I believe is not allowed in competition)?
Plus I was worried about the extra ingredients listed such as selenium, copper, zinc, etc. since he’s getting a ration balancer, I didn’t want to over dose him on something.
So instead I started giving my guy straight flax seed.

Being one of those people, I will confess that I am going to check out the TC Omega Max today. I feed TC products, and if the savings are substantial, will give it a try. Right now, Omega Horseshine is $25 for 4.5 lbs, which is over $5 a pound.

Do you have some sort of “holistic” vet or something OP? This sounds like woo-woo to me, since I really can’t imagine what biological mechanism would connect the dots between “allergies” and “muscle soreness” and flax. And a CUP of that stuff is going to make him spit out his food. You’ll find about 80% of it in the bottom of the feed pail or spread on the ground.
I’d give him a good, stiff currying and plenty of turnout for the muscles, a dose of Azium as needed for seasonal allergies, and save my money on the flax seed.
Bullpucky. My old guy that needed all the help he could get ate more than a cup a day, happily. I’ve never seen a horse have a problem with it.
TSC carries a Dumor Ultra Shine (I think that’s the name) it’s a flax/rice bran supplement. May be worth checking ingredients on that, price seems very reasonable.

Did you grind it?
I fed it whole and it had a real tendancy to fall between the pieces of feed and end up left behind on the bottom of the bucket. I would wet the feed and stir it in-- which helped-- but I know if I had done a full cup I would have ended up with lots on the bottom of the bucket. I fed 1/2 a cup per day and saw GREAT results from it and didn’t have much wastage-- but I don’t know that I could get my horses to eat much more than that without wasting.
In other news, I am convinved to try that Omega Horseshine product now. I have picked it up and put it down at least 20 times at Tractor Supply in favor of a more basic ground flax product (the Manna Pro stabilized). But I have one really thin-skinned, allergy prone horse and I think I am going to pick the bag up and NOT put it down next trip

Maybe we should start a flax trial on here! I started my guy on it 4 days ago and have seen much improvement in his swollen cheeks/jowwels.

When I felt like it. But, if you feed some wet beet pulp it sticks just fine

Both of mine will lick their feed tub/bucket/my hand clean if there’s flax on it- seed or ground. They’re not on it daily, but more of a healthy treat.
Great timing for this thread! I have a filly I got last year that is allergic to bug bites and gets big welts and itches horribly.
I will be starting her on Flax this week!

I have also heard that spirulina and vitamin E in larger amounts can help!
If flax doesn’t work, I will be ordering spirulina. Hopefully the flax will work.
I eat about 2 tbsp. of ground flaxseed almost every day in oatmeal and my skin was not nearly as dry and itchy this winter as it has been before the flax. Also, I just noticed today how much better my knees are feeling when I have to squat down and get up again.
I had put my horse on OHS a few years ago; at first he didn’t mind it, but then wasn’t too crazy about it anymore.

Do you buy it ground or do you grind it yourself?
I won’t buy at the feed store. They want close to $9 for a 5# bag, which is just insane. I buy in bulk at Winco as well, but get the 25# lb for $20.
What’s a Winco? NW Washingtonian here too, and never heard of it.
Mine eat it just fine at that amount.

My guy gets extra Vit E and flax (a cup, btw) and he will still come in with a random welt the size of my palm from time to time. But I know he’s healthy, at least…

I use Bob’s Red Mill ground golden flaxseed. With the golden, I think you get more lignans with the same serving size. http://www.bobsredmill.com/organic-golden-flaxseed-meal.html
Tried chia seeds too. They stayed gritty in my oatmeal; it was like eating sand.
With either one, you need to add a lot more water to your oatmeal (if that’s how you use it) since it bulks it up a bit. I use old fashioned oats.
Is Winco a grocery store? My grocery stores dont sell large bags of flax, and I can’t imagine carrying out pounds and pounds of it every week from the bulk section… Ha!
I can get the stabilized TC product from my feed store, but no whole flax, so I’ll be picking that up next time. I’m going to stop oil for the summer and am planning to feed flax for the skin/coat benefits. Hopefully it helps my mare with allergy trouble!
