Flax seed

I want to start feeding my horse flax seed (whole, not oil) for a shinier coat. About how much should I feed per day for 1100 lbs?

mine gets 1/4 cup a day, but I grind it up before I scoop it

I too have also started my mare on flax seed(ground). I did some research here on Coth and came across a article someone posted by a nutritionist that said you could feed up to 8 oz. a day but not more that that. Started her on a 1/8 cup (1oz.) in the am. and pm. and just bumped her up to 1/4 cup(2oz.) in the am and still the 1/8 cup pm.

Make sure you grind the flaxseed up. The hard hulls make it so horses (and humans) can’t digest it.

Also, flaxseed will go rancid very quickly once ground. Best to grind as needed or to buy stabilized flaxseed meal (pre-gorund).

Triple crown makes a product that is only ground flax seed, competitive pricing versus buying/grinding your own. I feed a heaping cup to mine.

Same here. I feed 1 cup per day of Triple Crown Omega Max. It’s stabilized and has a 2-year shelf life so you don’t have to bother grinding up stuff. Much easier to feed this way. I pay around $25-26 a bag (no its not $50 at feed stores though it is listed as that much on their website). You can feed more than 1 cup a day but I notice a difference with this amount.

You can feed it whole. I feed a cup a day, 1/2 in the am & 1/2 in the pm.

I use Triple Crown Omega Max as well. I feed two cups per day - according to Triple Crown you can feed up to a pound per 1000 pounds of body weight and two cups comes out to just about 8 ounces by weight. I wanted something that would provide essential fatty acids (omega 3’s) while preventing sand colic. I would prefer to feed chia seed but I can’t find an affordable source for that.

I feed 1/2 cup whole am & pm, like the results. It amounts to around 6oz total. If you have any reason to suspect your horses teeth go for ground. I don’t think my horse would eat it as well if it was.

Does it really make their coats super shiny?

It does the same as oil or sunflower seeds in the shiny coat department. I want to start feeding it too but for its other properties, mainly strengthening hooves. I think it can add some weight to easy keepers. My horse only eats oats and I’ve had all sorts of people that come to do clinics comment on how shiny her coat is. If your horse is healthy and you groom it well, you shouldn’t have a problem with a shiny coat. But flax seed is great if you want to feed it as a supplement.

I feed more than a cup am and pm.

The stuff I buy is human grade, so before the bag is opened I take a jar out to the barn and bring some into the house for muffins, etc. After it has been opened not so much because I imagine spiders and mice running over it.

She did not have a problem with manure before, but now her manure is even perfect!

I fresh grind the flax by the feeding. Each horse gets 1/2 cup am and pm. It makes such a HUGE difference.

I feed 1 to 2 cups whole, but I don’t feed it every day. My horses stay in good weight on just hay, so they aren’t fed daily at the moment.

I feed 3/4 cup of whole flax a.m. and p.m. No need to grind it.

If you store it in a cool place in an airtight and opaque container, ground seed will be fine for 90 days.

I feed 1/2 cup a day.

I find feeding rice bran makes horses super shiny and dappley. It reduces the pain of figuring out how to best feed flax and do it affordably, at least for me. My horse always gets tons of compliments on his coat

I feed 1/2 cup of flax a day. I grind it in the coffee grinder. I think that you get more bang for your buck if you grind it.

I used to think that too, check out the TC product, it’s just about equivalent and saves you a LOT of time. I killed a blender trying to grind mine, lol!
