Flax seed

I am wondering about how much ground flax to feed my mare. I use about 1heaping T for myself, so if I just do the math…she is about 8 x heavier than me so that works out to a 1/2 C.
However, I have no info if that is enough to make a difference in either her or myself.

I am using flax in an effort to help the dry skin and poor coat my mare has.

Your estimate is on point.

Usually the recommendation is 1/2 cup to 1 cup daily. You can feed more safely, but I generally see positive results around 1/2 cup.

I had consulted with an equine nutritionist and they told me to feed 1 cup of ground flax daily. I feed 1/2 cup am and 1/2 cup pm. I purchase whole flax and grind it myself every morning for my horses. I have a vita-mix and I love the smell of fresh ground flax. My horses on average weigh 1300 lbs.

thanks, I have a uber cheap coffee grinder in the tack room I use to grind the flax. There is a local farmer who grows the flax so that is nice. Something I can buy local

I use 1 cup per day split between the feedings. I have also found that a good blender does a great job grinding it just right. I grind at feed time so it’s fresh. Obviously, this means that I buy whole flax.
