Preparing ahead for tick season. My vet recommended trying flea collars this year for my indoor/outdoor “barn” cats for ticks that hijack rides into the house. The cats have been on Revolution Plus or Nexguard, which kills the fleas and ticks but doesn’t prevent them from floating on their fur. I always heard negative things about flea collars but vet said there was a bad kind being sold on Amazon and the reputable ones should be safe. Any thoughts from the cat experts on here?
I won’t use flea collars on my cats. One of my friends used Serestro collar on her cat and she said it stopped working against fleas. I’ve also read that there have been adverse reactions with the collars. I’ve been using plain vanilla Frontline for years and it works just fine for me. I put it on every 4 weeks (28 days).
I have had very good luck with the Seresto collars on my barn cats for ticks (and fleas).
They do not act like it is torture like the chemicals between the shoulder blades do.
The one thing the Seresto collars do not do is any type of worm control.
I also use Seresto on my barn cat and find it very effective. I’m dubious about the break away ability of it, though, so glue it inside a regular break away cat collar.
My barn cats have lost a couple of them. Expensive loss, but I was happy to know that they broke when necessary.
Did you find the collars? I had a cat get a paw through one once, and wonder if it would have eventually loosened enough to be wriggled out of versus break. I don’t think they would break easily, if at all.
I have never found any collar that my barn cats have lost, and the number they have lost is stupidly high. (Since my barn cats tend to be plain black cats more often than not, if they are not wearing a Seresto collar (getting topical flea/tick/worm control) they are wearing a cat break-away collar so it is clear that they have an owner.)
I have no idea how they get them off or where they are hiding them all.
We do check their tightness quite frequently, when we are petting/feeding the cats.
