Fleas & cats - Frontline is NOT cutting it

my flea battle continues.

I have given them Advantage after the Frontline did squat and then 2 weeks later more Capstar tablets and was pleased that they didn’t run around like idiots so it must mean they are flea free.

However, the hungry fleas have now taken to jumping on my feet and biting me when I walk around. I’m still vacuuming every day and am coming up with fleas.

Cats currently locked in bathrooms and I laid down some flea spray that doesn’t have permethrin in it.

The flea life cycle is LOOONG. 3 months. And if they’re able to bite you they’re able to breed, which means the flea prevention on the cats is working if they’re not getting eaten alive and you are. You will have to continue vacuuming and washing every washable thing in the house, along with the flea spray. Good luck; it’s hard getting rid of fleas.

I read something on the internet the other day. Take it for what the source is worth, but seems pretty cheap and harmless to try. Take borax, the plain 20 mule team stuff you can get at the store, and sprinkle it all over the carpet. Work it in with a scrub brush so it’s really into the fibers, not just on the top. Let it sit and vacuum 5 days later. According to them, borax disagrees with fleas.

Diatomaceous earth… you can put it on the carpet, rub it in, wait a few days, vacuum… I haven’t tried this but read about it, it won’t hurt your cats, might help.

Borax is really some pretty vile stuff. It will kill a lot of things. It always cracks me up when people throw out Borax as some sort of green non-chemical wonder. It’s sodium borate, boric acid in solution.

I had a warm & fuzzy anti-Round Up neighbor who suggested I put Borax to prevent weeds for years. The fact that it would stay in the soil and kill everything for years didn’t seem to really register with him.

Okay, so here is what I had to do several years ago, when Frontline failed and my dogs brought in fleas to my home…and my 4 indoor-only cats, none of whom have ever had fleas, much less been treated preventatively for them. These instructions were per my vet.

I gave them all Capstar. I then bathed all of them, both dogs and cats, with Dawn dishwashing soap. When dry, the dogs got K9 Advantix II applied, the cats got Advantage. The same day, I treated the entire house with Mycodex Plus (link here). My vet assured me that it was non-toxic to my animals when DRY. So, I treated 2 bedrooms as directed, and then after I made sure it was all dry and vaccuumed, the dogs got locked into one, the cats in another, and I treated the rest of the house. After the rest of the house was done, I retreated the 2 bedrooms they had been locked in, just to ensure any stragglers got killed. Thankfully, half of my house is Pergo wood laminate flooring, and much of my furniture is leather. I bought 3 bottles of the spray, and treated all the carpet and curtains. Our bedding I washed in super hot, double rinse, etc.

Thankfully, the combo above knocked the dang fleas out. HOWEVER…weeks later I found evidence of a tapeworm in one of the cats, and I quickly checked the others and they were infected too. :disgust: Everyone got treated for tapeworms, and that seemed to finally be the end of it.

I bought Activyl (Active Constituents: 195 g/L Indoxacarb ( S-isomer )) for my animals from Pets Megastore in Australia. It’s done wonderfully for fleas. I buy two 6 packs of the largest dog dose and just dose it down for each animal. It’s the same product in the same potency for both dogs and cats, so that’s okay.

I haven’t had a problem with ticks this year, but I’ve still had two dogs come down with Erhlichia. It’s endemic around here.
