Fleas & cats - Frontline is NOT cutting it

This is the first time in years we’ve had problems, but all three of our cats had fleas. We got frontline which has always worked well in the past but they still have fleas. Not nearly as badly as before, but enough that they jump on me when cat is sitting in my lap.

What is better?

Revolution.

My mother was having a flea problem for the first time in 15 yrs. Frontline was not working. She went to a pet store and they sold her Wondercide. http://www.wondercide.com/natural-flea-tick-mosquito-control-for-dogs-evolv/

She put it on and pulled off some dead fleas within a couple of mins. She was thrilled as the dog has a flea allergy and was going crazy before the Wondercide.

Seconded. This is the only thing to use on cats in my opinion.

I used Vectra (have to get from my vet); but this year was exceptionally bad anyway. I tried Advantage II, then switched to Frontline Plus. The fleas are finally gone, at least I no longer see any, but my cat who this year developed an allergy is still biting and chewing himself.

I stopped by my vet yesterday afternoon with just this question. Pharaoh simply wasn’t having Frontline be effective, though it worked with the others. She said Cherentis or something like that (I’d never heard of it) is excellent and sold me one sample dose. Pharaoh was settling down and purring within 30 minutes.

ETA: It’s Cheristin.

Revolution like Frontline is also beginning to see breakthrough in efficacy though not to the same extent as Frontline. I would look into Cheristin available through your veterinarian.

Seresto collars have done wonders for flea infestations on my dog and cats. They last 8 months. Last time there was a problem, I used premise spray in house while we were all out for a while (natch!) then the collars. Haven’t seen a flea since, and it’s been 3 years.

Frontline has no effect on the fleas (dog or cat) here in the humid south.

Has anyone tried Cheristin yet?

I had this happen too this year. I gave Capstar and Revolution, then vet had me give Revolution again 2 weeks later. I still found adult fleas! Gave another Capstar. She’s having me do Frontline plus here two weeks out then Revolution in 2 weeks after that. I have Capstar on hand. These are my two barn cats whom I’ve never had an issue with before. Hot dry summer and I can’t spray the whole property, lol.

Advantage. NOT Advantix. Fleas became immune to fipronyl (stuff in Frontline) 3 yrs ago in my part of the steamy south.

Frontline stopped working for us about five years ago. Switched to Advantix, which worked for a couple of more years, then no luck.

We don’t have cats right now, but we’ve moved the dogs to oral NexGard, which seems to be working. Being in New England, with deer and field mice all over our property, we have tick concerns too. We’ve been using the NexGard for a few years now…no fleas and only dead ticks around the house.

NexGard is a dog only product.

Not that it addresses the problem in cats, but doesn’t regular heartworm medication also help to control fleas and ticks in dogs? I was always told that it did.

No it does not. There are combination products on the market the big one being Trifexis that controls fleas, heartworms and intestinal parasites. The only other one would be Sentinel that does flea eggs, intestinal parasites and heartworms. Plain heartworm products such as Heartgard, Iverheart and Interceptor do heartworm and usually some form of intestinal parasites.

Revolution. It also prevents heartworms, ear mites, and intestinal parasites. Even indoor cats are at risk for all of these.

I didn’t have any luck with Frontline so I used a week of the generic Capstar and then Advantage II and we will see where we are at.

The Capstar really helps to knock the fleas back although it is both sad and disgusting to watch your cats 30 minutes after they get the pill when the fleas are biting and dying.

The issue with flea control is the fleas have to jump on the cats to die so you do still see some fleas until they all cycle out.

PSA - You can’t use Advantix on cats. You can use Advantage II, but NOT ADVANTIX. The latter contains permethrins which are toxic to cats.

fleas are first and foremost a problem of the environment. You must traet the indoor environment to get control of what is getting on your cat
