Fleas! Help me fight this battle!

The thread with the OP almost losing their kitty from flea spray was a very timely thread for me. For the first time, my two dogs have brought fleas into our home. Ugh.

I’ve been using Frontline on the dogs for years, and never had a problem. When I found the fleas on my GR, I realized I was about 6 days past due on treating them, so I applied Frontline immediately. 4 days later, and still live adult fleas on my dogs. After my frantic call to the vet, I bathed them in Dawn and have since applied K9 Advantix II. So far, so good for the dogs. However, I don’t normally treat my four cats for fleas - they are all inside only and the dogs have never brought one in. So far, I’ve seen flea “dirt” on only one of our 4 cats (they are all inside only) but I’m very hesitant on what to do for them.

I do not want to flea bomb the house. I don’t give them regular baths, and so I’d rather skip that particular stress on them, if possible. I am not adverse to putting something topical on them, but am nervous about their bodies handling it. I did give them all Capstar last night - and have enough to treat them all again. However, that only lasts 24 hours, and only kills the live adult fleas. I have to assume there are more. My vet has recommended Advantage for them. Again, I’ll use it, but I’m just nervous for them as they’ve never had a topical chemical applied in the past.

I’ve seen anything from using Borax (the 20-mule team kind, not boric acid) to diamtomaceous earth on my carpets. I’d like to use as few chemicals as possible - and would like to be as least stressful for my kitties. Anyone ever used a product called Mycodex spray? What about treating my yard, any suggestions as to product to use?

Thanks in advance.

I’m in this same boat. My SO’s dogs brought fleas into my house and now all my cats have fleas. I HATE fleas.

Since I know my SO’s dogs come in the house sometimes, I have my cats on Advantage II but it doesn’t seem to be working any more. I’m thinking of switching to Comfortis or Revolution but I don’t know which would be better. The cat all really hate the Advantage and it seems to burn them.

I’ll be interested in other people’s responses to your question.

Put human grade DE on them. It does help with the fleas, although not as efficiently as topical monthly flea control. Flea comb them several times a day. Frontline is now useless, but Revolution still appears to work.

Just a quick update!

The dogs had K9 Advantix II applied, and I did go ahead and reluctantly apply Advantage to the kitties. They all seemed to tolerate it just fine, though one seemed to scratch at the spot more than the others. (Maybe he was just sensitive to the feeling of the liquid?) I ordered and received 2 bottles of Mycodex (1 bottle treats 500 square feet). For maximum effectiveness, I vacuumed the heck out of my carpeted areas before I sprayed the Myxodex. It is an aerosol spray, you spray from a height of 2-3’ in a broad back and forth sweeping motion - but do not soak the carpets or other areas, just a light mist is all you need. You do not have to remove animals or humans from the house, but you should keep pets off of the sprayed areas until it dries. In my house yesterday, I kept them off (not without some difficulty, sneak jerks) for about an hour. There is an odor with it, but not super unpleasant - I sprayed some B&BW room spray after and all was fine. The spray company claims to kill all 4 stages of fleas, and to remain effective for 200+ days. We’ll see! So far, so good!

Has anyone tried Vectra?

In my experience, Vectra is very effective and I have seen no significant adverse reactions.

I use Vectra on my dogs, because not only do we have fleas about, ticks are an issue. Frontline quit working for ticks, so I switched to Vectra and find it to be very effective. Advantage works for most cats and kittens for fleas, and for those few that it doesn’t work on, Revolution is the gold standard.

We tore up all the carpets. Solved the problem.

If it happens again, just Revolution all the cats.

My parents’ cats are strictly outdoor, barn cats, and all get Revolution. Never seen a flea on any of them.

I switched to Vectra 3D last year when Frontline stopped working for fleas. We have fleas and ticks around here, and I haven’t had any trouble since we switched.

I am resurrecting this topic because it looks like revolution is no longer working on my cats. I THOUGHT I got rid of them when I brought in the darned stray, but he must have had a few leftovers hanging on. I’m flea combing, just had the house treated (and treated with revolution about an hour before that, then removed all of the animals from the house for several hours). The dog, who was treated with trifexis, seems to be relatively free three days later, but the cats? OMG, it’s like I didn’t even touch them.

BTW, I’m also vacuuming daily, AND flea combing all four of them. I feel like I’m crawling (they’re not THAT bad, but it’s still annoying). I expected to find one or two on the cat, but three days after revolution, I got 7 off him (varying sizes). What more can I do? I used Advantage II a couple of months ago, but the past 2 months have been revolution.

It’s so bad I’m thinking about leaving home for a few weeks :P. My daughter will be moving out and taking two of them with her, so the plan there is to give them Capstar when they move (before the get to the new place). I’m hoping that with only 2 remaining that I can get a handle on it, but I’ve got two months to go…

Oh yeah, and retreating the house in 10 days…

Fwiw I eliminated fleas by getting hens.
I don’t remember how long it took, but as long as we had hens there were no fleas anywhere.

I switch off on flea products every year. I’m currently on Advantage II for both the dogs and cats and it’s working well. Although my cats are indoor cats, I have to keep them treated because the dogs come in and out and are exposed to other dogs where they can pick up fleas.

Has anyone used or heard of Seresto? I’ve read mixed reviews, particularly with its use on cats. The idea of not having to apply flea treatment every month on 5 animals is very appealing, especially with the one cat that tries to take your arm off with each application. I have the scars to prove it.

I used the seresto collar on the dog when it first came out, and it did work against ticks (or tick season was nearly over anyway when I put it on) but didn’t work all that well against fleas, unfortunately. It may in your area…

If I had a flea problem again, I would probably just burn the whole house down. We had a flea problem in our first apartment (I believe the fleas were there when we moved in) and it was a NIGHTMARE.

After numerous treatments for the cats (2 indoor cats, and we had no dog) the fleas kept coming back and they were EATING ME ALIVE. Seriously, you can spray the pets with whatever but WTF do you do when they are biting you?!

We ended up doing a very serious treatment on the cats, and having a professional exterminator do the apartment .

My husband never had so much as a single flea bite, but they just LOVED me. It was horrible!

Best of luck to you, OP!

my vet sells Vectra 3D. i have used it and not had any problems.

We used to use flea traps in every room, every night. Make sure the room is dark. Put out a shallow baking pan of water with a squirt of hand dish soap mixed in the water. Shine a high intensity light on the pan of water. The fleas will jump into the pan of soapy water and drown.

We started our dogs on Sentinel, which is a heart worm preventative and also prevents young flea development, about 10 years ago. We have never had a flea since then.
