%&*#* fleas

Advantage or Advantix have worked for me for years, but not this year :(. But I was walking down my driveway wearing shorts the other day, and suddenly found about a half-dozen of the buggers on my ankles. I think it must have been a spot where one of the wild rabbits recently rolled. So now we have an infestation. Dirty-word.

We have one Lab and two dachshunds. I never thought
we could be without fleas, but I started giving the Lab garlic tabs for dogs and even the little dogs don’t have fleas. Haven’t seen a flea in 3 years.

I also give the powder form to my old QH that used to rub himself raw in the summer due to no seeums. Not only did
the garlic stop the bugs and itching, he stays black all summer. Dont know what’s up there, but it works.

I love that we don’t have to use chemicals on the dogs.
I get my garlic from Springtime Supplements.

My dogs have a hundred acres they can roam on. I can’t treat it all. I’ve used e-bay purchased Frontline previously without a hitch, but it no longer is working. I bought Comfortis from the vet - that didn’t do any good. I put on Advantage two weeks ago, and that was doing better than anything, but they’re starting to scratch again. Fortunately, I don’t have carpet, and fleas rarely bite me, but I have a white dog that’s a flea magnet, and a doberman who appearas to have a flea allegy.

Between the fleas and the flies, I can’t wait for winter.

Advantage and Frontline has stopped working for us. Our yard gets treated regularly. All the dogs and cats get monthly flea treatment. This year just seems to be a bad year :frowning:

But I have an elderly cat who is starting to show signs of side effects from flea treatments- I’m searching for alternatives for her.

My mom gets her Frontline from her vet, and it wasn’t working on her dogs.

I get my Frontline from Costco (and drsfostersmith.com occasionally) and it has been working just fine.

I don’t think it’s a source issue.

If you have fairly large dogs and are not afraid to go off label, go the farm supply store and purchase the purple python cattle ear tags.

I forgot the brand name and it is too far to walk to the kennel right now in the rain.

I have 21 foxhounds. I don’t have any fleas.

Last year, I decided to try other methods and and got a good flea infestation.

Wrap the ear tag around the collar and staple the ends so it forms a loop around the collar.

If you have pups that chew collars off each other, I would not use them until they grow up and get over it.

You do not need to treat the barn. Fleas will get on the dog, bite him and fall off dead. No effort on your part.

The quickest way to apply the tags to the collar is to get the tool used to pierce the cow’s ear. Wrap the tag around the collar and pierce the end.

Wrap it so the large flat end of the button is next to the dog’s neck, not the sharp end…

This method has been used on thousands of foxhounds however I would be careful about putting them on really small dogs.

Of course, you could cut the tag down to a much smaller size.

$25.00 or so will get you 20 tags and a tag will protect a dog for the entire summer season.

No ticks, no fleas.

cssutton -That sounds great! Could you put those on horses’ halters?

Thanks for the tip.

I posted a similar topic about flea problems in the last week and you might benefit from some of those replies. I also posted what was giving us results so far. We have a toy house dog, a Pit who lives outside and a house cat. So far Advantage has worked for them but I am beginning to think fleas build an immunity just like flies do. I never use the same fly product on my horses during the entire fly season - I have to switch three times during the season.

I have heard of people wrapping them around the halter.

I never have done that as I have not had a significant fly problem with the horses.

Heads up: 9 year old thread bumped by spam, which has been reported

I’m still planning to try a couple of the ideas. Fleas are horrible this year.

We use Seresto collars on our dogs and cats. This is our 4th year with them - no issues, no fleas/ticks. It’s painful to buy them all at the beginning of the season, but with 8 months of protection it averages to about $7/month so I budget and am ready when it’s time to buy in the spring.

I found out my two indoor cats somehow got fleas?!? I thought I was somehow getting mosquito bites - NOPE!! We got meds for the cats from the vet and spent all weekend laundering and vacuuming everything. Question - how difficult is it to get rid of these jerks from an apartment? Is continuous, diligent vacuuming and laundry enough? The vet said it didn’t seem like an “infestation” on the cats and I made a simple flea trap that didn’t catch anything…

This happened to us, somehow our precious indoor kitty got fleas. All it takes is one to jump on while they’re sitting in a window or we could’ve brought it in from outside - who knows? We tried for weeks to treat kitty & the house. Daily vacuuming, grooming, washing, etc. It was freaking exhausting. Also tried “flea traps” and literally got nothing.

Bottom line - give kitties a Capstar to kill everything and then do a drop treatment. We did have pest control out to treat our house but the guy assured us we did NOT have an infestation and it was basically just poor kitty being a carrier. If we had done the Capstar at the very beginning, we would’ve saved ourselves weeks of inconvenience and headaches.

Thank you!! I think we’re going to do the Capstar. We did the drop treatment (behind the neck stuff) our vet recommended as a good one - then yesterday I was combing them and found like half a dozen live fleas still there a week later and I’m still getting a couple bites on my legs after letting the cats hang out on my lap. UGHHHH. We got some “pet safe” spray as well. Happy to take a scorched earth approach. So gross.

Seresto flea collars also saved me-nothing else worked. It also has the benefit if I remember correctly of getting in the pet’s dander/ dead skin which ends up on the floor and sleeping areas so kills on and off the pet and also helps control for any pets that are anti-collar (semi-feral cat!) It was a miracle for me as I was overrun and nothing was working. I have not had problems since. (The oral type use to make my poor dog vomit.ugh poor boy.) Good luck.(oops see it was old thread–well this question never gets old!0

Man oh man I decided to re-try the stuff from the vet (at their suggestion) and it’s done nothing. Fleas fleas fleas on these cats.

The Amazon reviews for both the Seresto flea collars and the Capstar pills have multiple reviews saying these items killed people’s cats. Ugh I know they are just reviews but they’re freaking me out. How can you tell whether something will be an issue? Trying a little at a time or what? I know animals are as individualistic as people and allergies can be random - obviously people with horrible experiences would rate/review products more often than people who had success and no comments but I have no idea how to get an objective answer on this.

I have used Seresto collars on all my dogs and cats big and small with no issues. I also have many family members who use them, in fact I have bought the collars as gifts. 😂 a little pricey to start (Petsmart says $80 for the collar but they price match Chewy that does $54 I believe). Mine last longer than 8 months. I waited til 9 and 10 months with no issues!

Our vet sold to us a Seresto collar for $60 for our dog, put it on, ten minutes later dog was foaming at the mouth, disoriented, then was throwing up violently.
Took the collar off, gave the dog a bath and finally two hours later dog was back to normal.
That collar probably would have killed her if we had not been right there to take it off and wash what we could out.

Just be careful first time you use them, watch your critters, just in case it doesn’t agree with them.

My dog is back on a Virbac Preventic collar as she has used for several years now without any problems nor flies or ticks.

!!!

Yikessss - yeah, that’s what i’m afraid of. I suppose we could try and watch them like a hawk for any sign of trouble. The Preventic collars aren’t available for cats.

Capstar too - I could try a really small dose of the pill to start and watch if any issues. So scary - though it seems that literally any flea tactic has side effects for some cats, other than the products without any seeming active ingredients which we have tried and aren’t helping AT ALL. I want to pet my cat without freaking fleas hopping onto me and biting me eeek. Poor things are scratching and even after trying the vet’s suggested remedy for two months now, we still comb and get up to 10 of the live suckers at a time. UGHHSUDGHDUHG. All of free time is consumed with vacuuming and laundry - this is a nightmare.
